Kansas Highway 7 travels the height of the Sunflower State for 243.98 miles from the Oklahoma state line north of Picher to the Nebraska state line northwest of White Cloud. K-7 overlaps with U.S. 69 north 12.38 miles to U.S. 160 at Columbus. U.S. 69 eventually turns north to Pittsburg and Arma while K-7 stays to the west through Cherokee and Girard. The two converge again south of Fort Scott.

K-7 combines with U.S. 69 for another 9.80 miles north between Godfrey and U.S. 54 in Fort Scott. K-7 turns west alongside U.S. 54 for 3.69 miles to 185th Street, where it resumes a northerly course to Mound City. Shifting westward into Miami County, K-7 commences a 30.21 mile long concurrency with U.S. 169.

U.S. 169/K-7 overlap along a freeway bypassing Osawatomie and Paola north to the Johnson County line. The two highways continue along an at-grade expressway around Spring Hill and an arterial route into the city of Olathe. U.S. 169 parts ways with K-7 to join Interstate 35 northeast toward Kansas City while K-7 extends north on Harrison Street to Old Highway 56.

Old Highway 56 leads K-7 one mile west to a continuous flow intersection (CFI) with Lone Elm Road south and Parker Street north. K-7 runs north along Parker Street to the Ernie Miller Park & Nature Center, where it shifts westward. The state highway upgrades to a limited access highway north from Harold Street to the freeway along K-10 on the Lenexa city line.

K-7 continues north along a controlled access expressway through Lenexa and western reaches of Shawnee to the Kansas River at Bonner Springs. Beyond a commercialized intersection with Kansas Avenue, K-7 meets I-70/U.S. 24-40 at the Kansas Turnpike, where U.S. 73 begins. U.S. 24/40 overlap with U.S. 73/K-7 north from I-70 to State Avenue as they continue west to Tonganoxie. U.S. 73/K-7 advance north to Lansing, Leavenworth and Atchison.

U.S. 73 separates from K-7 west alongside U.S. 59 at Atchison. K-7 continues another 36.23 miles on a rural highway to U.S. 36 west of Troy and to 703 Trail in Richardson County, Nebraska.
