North Carolina Highway 49

NC 49 is part of a long multi state highway with S.C. 49 from Laurens and Virginia Route 49 to Crewe. NC 49 measures 177.40 miles across the Tar Heel State from the Charlotte area northeast to Virgilina, Virginia.

North Carolina Route 49 enters North Carolina across Lake Wylie into southwestern Mecklenburg County. Following S Tyron Street to the South End district, NC 49 leads northeast into the city of Charlotte.

Paralleling I-277/U.S. 74-NC 27 (John Belk Freeway), NC 49 dog legs west along W Morehead Street (old NC 27) for 0.25 miles to U.S. 29 at S Mint Street. U.S. 29/NC 49 overlap northeast from I-277 and Bank of America Stadium through the Third and Fourth Wards by Uptown Charlotte 7.93 miles to University City Boulevard. NC 49 branches east from there to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and Harrisburg in Cabbarus County.

Passing through southern reaches of the city of Concord, NC 49 continues northeast to U.S. 52 at Richfield and across Tuckertown Reservoir alongside NC 8. NC 49 in Randolph County leads to the city of Asheboro, where it meets U.S. 64 along the Asheboro Bypass and I-73/74-U.S. 220 along an overlap with U.S. 64 Business.

U.S. 64/NC 49 combine east to the town of Ramseur. Beyond there, NC 49 turns northward to U.S. 421 near Liberty and I-40/85 in the city of Burlington. NC 49 combines with NC 54 (Harden Street) east into the city of Graham, where both routes overlap with NC 87 to Downtown. NC 49 separates from NC 54 along E Elm Street to the town of Haw River.

North from Green Level, NC 49 heads to Pleasant Grove near NC 62. The state route turns east to NC 119 at Just Crossroads and then northeast into Orange County. Following a 0.44 mile overlap with NC 86, NC 49 angles northeast to the Person County seat of Roxboro. NC 49 joins U.S. 158 east for 0.82 miles to U.S. 501 (Madison Boulevard) in Roxboro, and then overlaps with U.S. 501 north for 4.51 miles.

Northeast from Roxboro, NC 49 crosses Mayo Reservoir en route to northwest Granville County. NC 49 converges with NC 96 just south of the state line. The two overlap 0.17 miles north into the town of Virgilina, where they become Virginia Routes 49/96. SR 96 leads west to U.S. 501 while SR 49 continues east to U.S. 59 at Clarksville.
