When U.S. 218 was realigned west onto the freeway leading north from Riverside to Cedar Rapids, the old alignment was redesignated partially as Iowa 923 and 965. Iowa 923 followed old U.S. 218 from a point north of Iowa 92 outside Ainsworth to Riverside Drive in Iowa City. Iowa 965 lined the former US route from U.S. 6 (2nd Avenue) in Coralville to U.S. 30 & 151 in Cedar Rapids.

Iowa 923 was fully decommissioned on July 1, 2003, after the portion north of CR G36 was dropped in 1991. All but the southernmost half mile of Iowa 965 was turned over to local maintenance by September 1, 2004. The remaining state-maintained section connects U.S. 6 with I-80 in Coralville.

Portions of old U.S. 218 outside municipal boundaries are posted as County Road W64. This includes segments leading south from Iowa City to Ainsworth and through Crawfordville. The local section between North Liberty and 120th Street near Swisher is designated as County Road W60 but not posted in the field. This stretch is named Highway 965.
