Traveling across the width of New Mexico, U.S. 60 navigates along a mostly rural course 397.90 miles from east of Eagar, Arizona to Clovis. The western third of U.S. 60 traverses area of Cibola National Forest and high plains above the Rio Grande Valley. The two lane highway passes through the Very Large Array (VLA) midway between Datil and Magdalena.

Through the city of Socorro, U.S. 60 combines with Business Loop I-25 along a commercial strip through Downtown. U.S. 60 overlaps with I-25 northward 24.3 miles to Bernardo. East from there, U.S. 60 bee lines across a plateau to the Los Pinos Mountains. A series of s-curves leads the route southeast across the mountains into Torrance County. U.S. 60 trends northward from there through the rural towns of Abo, Mountainair and Willard.

Continuing east across the dry lake bed of Laguna del Perro, U.S. 60 combines with U.S. 285 from Encino and then U.S. 54 through Vaughn. U.S. 84 ties into U.S. 60 east from Fort Sumner to Clovis and Texico by the Texas state line.
