Before the Interstate 88 junction with Interstate 81 was completed, Interstate 88 was originally signed on the New York 7 expressway into Binghamton. Once the interchange and coexisting Chenango River crossing was completed, the route was reassigned to its current alignment. Photo taken 05/11/05. |

Crossing the Chenango River, we come to the junction with Interstate 81. Interstate 81 north provides access to Cortland, Syracuse, Watertown, and Ontario, Canada via the Thousand Islands Bridge. Southbound Interstate 81 provides access to New York 17 and all Binghamton interests as well as access to Scranton and Harrisburg, PA, Hagerstown, MD, Martinsburg, WV, Winchester, Harrisonburg, and Roanoke, VA, and Bristol, TN before ending at Interstate 40 east of Knoxville, TN. The interchange provides high speed access to both freeways in all directions but one. Southbound Interstate 81 to Eastbound Interstate 88 traffic must utilize Exit 5 for North Front Street (U.S. 11) to access the highway. Photo taken 05/11/05. |
