2017 Delaware Road Meet

Nearly one year removed from the first ever Delaware Road Meet, I am finally getting around to updating the Delaware pages on the site with content from last December. The meet took place on December 16, with 19 of us gathering at the Delaware Welcome Center Travel Plaza on Interstate 95 near Newark. After two hours or so of commiserating, divvying out road maps, and consuming Philly cheese steaks [...]

Sheridan Expressway on the Chopping Block

Interstate 895, the Sheridan Expressway in the Bronx, New York, is the latest urban freeway set for removal. Plans to convert the freeway to an at-grade boulevard date back at least to 2011, with formal approval by various agencies in 2017. The $97 million Arthur Sheridan Enhancement Project will reconstruct the central portion of Interstate 895 into an urban arterial, with three signalized intersections built along the current uninterrupted [...]

First Coast Expressway open to traffic

Had the opportunity this past weekend to check out the First Coast Expressway (State Road 23) joining Middleburg with the west side of Jacksonville, Florida. The new toll road is now fully open, but tolls are not collected at this time due to ongoing drainage construction and final paving. Work also remains underway at the north end of State Road 23, where new ramps are being built between I-10 [...]

New I-74 Mississippi River Bridge Update

Work continues to progress on the new I-74 Mississippi River Bridge linking Bettendorf, Iowa with Moline, Illinois. Construction on the $1.2 billion span got underway in July 2017 and continues through 2021. Crews are working on both sides of the river, building the future bridge approach viaducts, and erecting pier supports for the eventual six-lane bridge. The first of the two replacement bridges will open by early 2020. With the [...]

Missouri dropping state named Interstate shields

First noted on our 2015 Upper Midwest and Great Plains trip along I-29, and dating back to at least 2012 with the establishment of Interstate 49 in Missouri, MoDOT continues to replace Interstate highway shields with markers that omit the state name. Joining neighboring Arkansas and Iowa, the three states opted for signs with larger numerals (though Iowa's version does not fully utilize the space where the state name once [...]

Orlando Overhaul

Just published the last of the page updates for the Orlando area toll road network. A number of these guides dated back to 2007, with photos taken on separate drives in late 2006. Among the major changes made in the ensuing decade include expansion of existing toll roads, construction of Wekiva Parkway, and the rebranding of the Orlando-Orange County Expressway Authority (OOCEA) to the Central Florida Expressway Authority (CFX). [...]

Steadily making progress

Number of pages converted Remaining html pages We are steadily making progress with the site wide conversion for the remaining html pages. The bulk of what remains is in California, and the Westerns states in general, in addition to 200 plus pages on SouthEastRoads.com. It will be some time before we can get through them all, and in the meantime we will mix in some new content [...]

AARoads Sitewide Revamp

This week's long awaited site change to use a content management system (CMS) based design culminates over 18 months of work. As site visitors may have noticed, blog entries, updates on the main page and Interstate-Guide, and new content additions trickled down due to the back end work. A lot of back and forth with Matt over at TWCClassics, who helped tremendously with both coding and also teaching, and assistance [...]
