A morbid rule, but a clever one, and the one I'll probably use when I make my own map.  (I've got a road trip to Denver next week, although I'm not sure it will add any additional counties.  I'll probably post a map after that.)

what if you died straddling the county line?

(to answer the inevitable follow-up question: what if you had two fatal bullet wounds?)

I don't know how the Department of Health would handle it, but I would say yes -- if you get one foot, but not both, the county still counts.

Quotethat's still kind of insane, having the domestic and international terminals approximately five miles apart.  I've missed a flight before, because I had to make that trip, and then go through customs and security.

A mile as the crow flies.  3.5 miles driving.  A mile-and-a-quarter via the LRT, plus about 2000ft of walking.

It should also be noted that most Delta International flights go into the main Lindbergh terminal.  The Humphrey terminal is mostly used by charter flights and the "low cost carriers", namely Sun Country, AirTran, and Southwest.

3.5 miles driving.

I told the cab driver to step on it.  He did his damn best, hitting 90mph on what I believe is MN-5 - if not, then some road with a sign for MN-5.

I had remembered, on my outbound flight, how long the transfer took: approximately 20 minutes by subway and foot.  so I knew I had to beat that.  I almost did.

I reiterate that it is insane for two terminals to be 20 minutes apart.  even in such mega-airports like DFW and ATL, I can get from one end to the other faster than that.

Just for a change of pace, here's my Canada map:

I only have one county equivalent in Canada: Algoma District in Ontario (where Soo Ontario is).

Not sure where else to put this, but I figured I would share some information I've discovered when "retracing my steps":

Effingham County, GA exists along a tiny portion of I-95, at the border between South Carolina and Georgia.

I-75 crosses over Cherokee County, GA (there's even one exit).

I-75 also spans a very short (but signed) piece of Crawford County, GA.

Florida's Turnpike crosses into Okeechobee County for a short stretch, before re-entering Indian River County for a few miles (signed).

as far as I can tell, eastbound US-64 goes into Texas.  westbound does not.  the northwest corner of the Texas panhandle is almost exactly down the middle of the carriageway.

Mightyace, I see you only dipped down into South Carolina for York County. Was that intentional just to check off SC, or were you there for a reason?

No particular reason for asking, that's just my home county.

Similarly, Durham NC? RDU airport is in Wake County.

My brother and I went to Carowinds which straddles the state line there.

I hadn't looked those up, I was just guessing.

I have corrected those to match their respective counties for the airports in question.

That's strange, I applied after midnight on a week day and got a response within 30 seconds!

That brings up some other questions I've had that I'll need to figure out when I do my map:
Does I-75 in Kentucky go through Owen County? It appears as though the SB lanes do but the NB lanes do not(I have been on I-75 in the area NB, but not SB).
Does I-74 in Indiana go through Rush County? I've seen slightly different results from different online maps-Bing Maps and MapQuest both make it look like it falls just outside of the county line, but OpenStreetMap makes it look like it does go just inside the lines.
Does the SB side of US 63/167 briefly enter Union Parish in Louisiana just after crossing the state line from Arkansas? The highway serves as the parish line before turning to the SE and entering Claiborne Parish, so I would assume that the SB side is in Union Parish(I have been on this road once, and it was SB).

http://www.mob-rule.com/counties/faq.html covers at least one of these questions, and some others people might have as well.

Good that you got a piece of Nunavut, something on my to-do list.  Did you fly up there, or pick it up by a boat trip out of Quebec's Jamesie municipality (since Nunavut includes waters offshore from that municipality)?

The first step was driving to the end of James Bay road.    From there, the cut-off past Chisasibi goes up to the waters of the James Bay.  Since the border of Nunavut includes any islands offshore, we hopped onto a big rock about 5 feet offshore.  Therefore, we were on an "island" in the James Bay and therefore in Nunavut.  We were prepared to swim if necessary, but we deemed it unnecessary.

US 67 now goes through Craighead County, AR.  If you have taken the new segment of freeway to where it ends at AR 226, you have been in Craighead County.  Previously, US 67 did not enter the county.

Are there are any serious proposals for any new counties, secessions from existing counties, etc?

A proposal for a new Petersburg borough in Alaska, to include most but not all of the existing Petersburg census area, received state approval earlier this month, but is subject to challenges by opponents and to local voter approval.  I don't know whether the Census Bureau would keep the remainder of the census area (mainly Kake village and some adjacent areas, with a total population under a thousand) as a separate census area, or fold it into the Hoonah-Angoon census area.  If a separate Kake census area is maintained, the U.S. county equivalent count will increase to 3,144 with the creation of the new Petersburg borough.

Juneau borough would also like a small piece of the Petersburg census area, and could get it in a separate proceeding, but the affected area has a lot of fish and glaciers but no people.

Alaska remains the place to look for additional county changes, but after the Petersburg borough is decided, and the 2007-2008 creations of Skagway and Wrangell boroughs, things might stabilize for a little while.

There's been a proposal around for several years to reform Milton County, Georgia-which was folded into Fulton County back in the Depression era when Milton County went bankrupt. Milton County was the northern part of Fulton County-the southern part of Fulton County was Campbell County, which was made part of Fulton County around the same time(this is why Fulton County has a somewhat odd shape-it originally was roughly a mirror image of DeKalb County). There has not been any proposal to reform Campbell County that I know of, and the Milton County proposal seems to be stalled for now.
