Are you expected to sit there for 5 minutes timing how long the siren sounds for to determine if you need to switch to one of those radio stations?

They're for the nuclear plant in New Jersey across the Delaware River. They're pretty common between US 40-ish and Smyrna.

They're also found deep in South Jersey around the area of the plant.

You'll hear the sirens for miles.  Like tornado sirens in the midwest, there's no mistaken as you drive along if there's an issue.

My comment was mostly in jest, but still, "if siren sounds for 3 to 5 minutes" seems to imply that if the siren sounds for only two minutes, or for six, then you don't need to tune to those radio stations.

I think they run tests 1-2 times a year but not sure if they run the sirens for 3-5 minutes.  I know the plant near Philly does tests but I lived outside the warning zone (so I don't know how they run the sirens).

FYI, work zone speed cameras are coming back July 8.  They will still be 24/7 unmanned boxes and the trigger is now 11 MPH (not 13 MPH like in the trial).  With the surcharges, fines are basically tripled (the 50% surcharge on the doubled fine basically makes it so).

OK so it's just like MD?  11 MPH.

Other question, when is the work on I-295N going to begin?

No surprise at the number of speed camera warnings on I-95.  People drive like maniacs without a work zone.

WDEL - Work zone speeders number in the tens of thousands

The problem with these type work zones is the *perceived* level of danger. There's still 3 thru lanes, normal width, with work taking place well behind concrete construction barriers - if the work is taking place at all when drivers were speeding.  There's a reduced limit of 55 mph, but travelers don't feel like they need to slow down because there's nothing that "encourages" them to slow down.

Look - it's dangerous out there.  On the Baltimore Beltway earlier this year several workers were hit and killed behind a barrier due to a driver weaving in and out of traffic who clipped another vehicle.  And there's going to be times when workers will need to be on or next to the live travel lanes.  Anyone who's broken down on the highway needing to change a vehicle knows what it's like when traffic is flying by at 75 and the only thing separating you from them is 4" of paint on the roadway.

So unless DelDOT narrows those lanes or purposely congests traffic, the state is gonna rack up the money.
