

County Road 278 constitutes five sections of roadway in Northwest Florida. The two segments in Washington County serve Vernon. The western component lines Creek Road 8.77 miles from Dupress Road near Millers Bay to Fortune Lake, Brunner Pond and SR 79 just north of Holmes Creek. The eastern branch separates from SR 277 in Vernon along Pioneer Road. Traveling 14.12 miles, CR 278 heads east to SR 77 at Wausau and CR 276 (Orange Hill Road) north of Gilberts Mill.
The first of three segments of County Road 278 in Jackson County links CR 167 (Fairview Road) with SR 73, 5.30 miles to the east along Laramore Road. The 1.69 mile leg on Peacock Bridge Road connects SR 73 and SR 71 across the Chipola River. CR 278 resumes east from SR 71 at Sink Creek along Alliance Road 4.75 miles to CR 275 (Church Street), where it shifts onto Birchwood Road. Birchwood Road extends CR 278 another 3.31 miles east to SR 69 at CR 69A.



CR 278 (Alliance Road) rises 140 feet in elevation from SR 71 to an agricultural area ahead of Dowling Road.

Forthcoming Dowling Road leads south to the Calhoun County line, where CR 275B commences a 0.99 mile route along Alliance Road to Mt. Olive Cemetery Road (CR 275A).
