Measuring 21.80 miles, South Carolina Highway 296 runs northeast from S.C. 14 near Five Forks in Greenville County to U.S. 29 at W Main and St. John Streets outside Downtown Spartanburg. S.C. 296 provides a cutoff from S.C. 14 east to S.C. 146 at Five Forks. S.C. 146/296 combine for 0.60 miles along Woodruff Road through the suburban community.
Crossing the Enoree River into Spartanburg County, S.C. 296 (Reidville Road) advances three miles northeast to S.C. 101 and five miles into the town of Reidville. Continuing along Reidville Road, S.C. 296 becomes increasingly suburban leading toward Spartanburg. The state highway expands to six lanes east from I-26 onto a 0.90 mile long overlap with S.C. 295 (John B. White, Sr. Boulevard). John B. White, Sr. Boulevard extends S.C. 296 northeast to U.S. 29.
S.C. 296 formerly extended east across Downtown Spartanburg along Daniel Morgan Avenue to U.S. 176/S.C. 9 (N Pine Street). The route was truncated west and realigned onto John B. White, Sr. Boulevard north to U.S. 29 at St. John Street.
