U.S. 12 traverses 339.4 miles through the state of Wisconsin, entering the western part of the state concurrent with Interstate 94 near Hudson along the St. Croix River. U.S. 12 parallels I-94 for most of the route across the Badger state, passing through the cities of Eau Claire, Baraboo and Madison to northern Illinois. U.S. 12 varies with segments upgraded to expressway, including the 17.5 mile long freeway from Elkhorn to Genoa City at the Illinois state line.
