U.S. 74 – Shelby, NC Bypass

Carter took some photos recently along U.S. 74 eastbound at the new Shelby Bypass currently under construction. The interstate standard freeway will eventually shift U.S. 74 north onto a freeway around the Cleveland County seat, connecting with the U.S. 74 freeway around Kings Mountain further east. When completed, U.S. 74 will provide a seamless freeway between Interstates 26 and 85. Split into six sections, the first contracts for work on [...]

Interstate additions in H.B. 244

There are no plans from MODOT to extend I-57 south to the U.S. 67 freeway in Arkansas currently. The Breathitt Parkway north from Nortonville to Henderson was designated as a northern extension of I-69 in 2015. The 34 mile stretch of the parkway south from the Western Kentucky Parkway was previously unnumbered. Signed by the President on May 5, 2017, H.B. 244 designates U.S. 67 north from Interstate [...]

Delaware Highways Revamp

Just put the last of the new photos from Kent County onto the site, rounding out several weeks of page updates and additions covering all Delaware state routes between Smyrna and the south end of Sussex County. The revamp also includes a few more source citations, and more concrete dates based upon the DelDOT map archive. Many of these pages were written in the early 2000s, with minimal attention or [...]

Abandoned Will Rogers Tpk – Catoosa, OK

Construction of the Creek Turnpike around Tulsa, Oklahoma between March 1999 and August 2002 included a realignment of Interstate 44 from Skelly Drive to the Will Rogers Turnpike.1 The new roadway bypassed the section of I-44 angling northeast from Skelly Drive to the split with Oklahoma 66, and the transition to the Will Rogers Turnpike. It was considered to be one of the most dangerous stretches of road in the [...]

Prospect Mountain Project

A long term project currently underway in Binghamton, New York addresses both the notorious "Kamikaze Curve" section of New York 17 (Southern Tier Expressway) and replaces the structurally deficient bridges both over the Chenango River and at the directional T interchange joining the future I-86 with Interstate 81. Named after adjacent Mt. Prospect, project work was awarded on November 1, 2011, with major construction underway in spring 2012. Phase I [...]

The many Interstate designation changes of Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania currently has 22 signed Interstate highways, with the planned extension of I-295 west from Trenton, New Jersey set to add another later this year. With two major metropolitan areas, and several medium sized cities as well, the state sees an array of Interstate loops and spurs. Several of the main routes appeared on the August 2, 1947 National System of Interstate Highways map. Following the Federal-Aid Highway Act of [...]

The newest North Carolina Interstates

The Tar Heel state continues to lead the nation in proposing and developing new Interstate corridors. Additions approved by AASHTO in 2016 alone designated Interstates 42, 87 and 587. These join ongoing progress or long range plans for Interstates 73, 274, 285, 785, 295, 795, etc. We drove across North Carolina last month and checked out progress on a number of projects: Interstate 42 will run east from I-40 at [...]

Johnson County Gateway Phase II Complete

Recently completed was the second phase of a long term project in the southwest Kansas City metropolitan area. Known as the Johnson County Gateway project, the $600 million, three-phase construction added high speed flyovers and collector distributor roadways and widened roadways to both improve traffic flow and better separate ingress and egress movements. Considered to be the most congested interchange in the state, the junction of Interstate 35, Interstate 435 [...]

Fayetteville Outer Loop Progress – January 2017

Among the many future Interstate corridors designated across the state of North Carolina, the one gaining perhaps the most headway is the Fayetteville Outer Loop. Designated as Future Interstate 295, and signed in the field as North Carolina 295, the new beltway is roughly two thirds of the way complete with the December 2, 2016 opening of a segment west from NC 24 & 87 (Bragg Boulevard) to the All [...]
