Because American media isn't adequately covering the extent to which we have pissed off Canada. I don't know Canadian polling firms well enough to say how reputable this poll is, but:

Quote41% of Canadians consider the United States an enemy country, compared with 22% who consider it an ally and 22% a neutral country. The share saying "enemy" has risen 15 points since June 2025.

Sure, that's not a majority saying we're an enemy, but if that's accurate at all, that means if you grab five random Canadians you can only get one of them to say the US is still an ally and two of them are saying we're an outright enemy. That's not exactly the sort of sentiment that makes one conducive to "not complaining"...

Quote from: JayhawkCO on August 29, 2026, 08:56:12 AMCan't wait until we get a day of the week renamed. Or the word for bread.

The names of the days all come from Old English, so I'd expect more that a month would be renamed.

*sigh*

September is going to be renamed Trumptember, and it will have 31 days.
I think this is needed.

New Mexico would have to vote on that, right? Changing a state's name isn't as simple as changing the name of a body of water.

Splitting the state into two may be a good start. And that certainly happened before.

What? New Mexico is already one of the smaller states population wise

Just thinking how president can achieve his goal. Do you see any other options?

I'm honestly not sure how even that ended up being simple, especially considering that these are international bodies of water.  Shouldn't that require agreements between nations or UN involvement or something?  But we live in an era where the president issues executive orders and everyone else rushes to implement them regardless of legality, so who knows.

Perhaps they could put some adults in the room to tell him he can't do that like often happened during his first term.

Well, you may be right that White House nurses should be more active in  making sure president receives all his medications as prescribed.
But that doesn't negate the fact that there are still a few goals president have set to be completed - like renaming NM, admitting Greenland and Canada to the union, etc.

Well, I'll keep that in mind for when there's actually a problem with the name of New Mexico, I guess...

New Mexico would have to vote on that, right? Changing a state's name isn't as simple as changing the name of a body of water.

It's literally in the first sentence of the NM State Constitution. Don't see how the federal government can override that.

When Virginia split after the civil war, a state constitutional convention chose the name.

Congress can name a state when acquiring a new territory to be a state.

Scott5114

More to the point, Trump renamed the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ontario by executive order. Executive orders are binding only on those who work in the executive branch, which happens to include the people who maintain GNIS. Google and Apple voluntarily chose to implement the executive order by using the name displayed in GNIS.

New Mexico is a whole other kettle of chili. Unlike the two bodies of water, New Mexico has its own government which could retaliate against anyone doing business there that refers to the state incorrectly. That might not be enforceable in court (First Amendment etc.) but it would still be a lot easier to just keep calling it New Mexico rather than to comply with a federal directive that isn't actually enforceable on you.

Is he also going to declare war on it if it doesn't go along with that?  It's gained such an enormous tactical advantage, after all!

That New Mexico name controversy reminds me of that short lived Hope and Faith sitcom from the early 2000s where Kelly Ripa's character thought New Mexico wasn't in the United States but a seperate country and thought you entered America at the Colorado border.
