U.S. 23

U.S. 23 has the distinction of being cosigned with another route for its entire alignment through North Carolina. The route enters the state from Dillard, Georgia with U.S. 441 along a four-lane highway. 14 miles beyond the state line, U.S. 23/441 combine with U.S. 64 for two miles around the Macon County seat of Franklin. U.S. 23/441 continue northward from Franklin to U.S. 74 (Great Smoky Mountain Expressway) at Dillsboro.

U.S. 441 parts ways with U.S. 23 for U.S. 74 west to Cherokee while U.S. 23 joins U.S. 74 east by Sylva. U.S. 23 Business loops south into Sylva while the Great Smoky Mountains Expressway bypasses the city to the north. A second business loop for U.S. 23 serves Waynesville btween Hazelwood and Lake Junaluska.

U.S. 19 combines with U.S. 23/74 east of Waynsville. The Great Smoky Mountains Expressway continues east to Exit 106, where U.S. 19/23 separate with U.S. 74 for Clyde and Canton. Following Carolina Boulevard into Clyde, U.S. 19/23 parallel I-40/U.S. 74 en route to Canton, Enka and Asheville.

U.S. 23 is one of four highways that combine with Interstate 26 leading north from Asheville. U.S. 25/70 join the freeway to Weaverville while U.S. 19 overlaps with I-26 to Mars Hills. U.S. 23 remains with I-26 into Tennessee while a section of old U.S. 23, east of the Mars Hill to Sams Gap section of Interstate 26 (Exits 9 to 3), is U.S. 23A.
