202.18 miles in overall length, Interstate A2 follows SR 2 along Richardson Highway 93.29 miles southeast from a trumpet interchange with SR 3 (Parks Highway) and Steese Expressway to SR 4 at Delta Junction. The remainder of I-A2 coincides with SR 2 along Alaska Highway southeast to SR 1 (Tok Cutoff Highway) at Tok.

A 20.62 mile long stretch of Interstate A2 along SR 2 (Richardson Highway) from Fairbanks east to North Pole and Eielson Air Force Base constitutes a controlled access expressway. The four lane stretch includes four interchanges and two sets of right in right out (RIRO) ramps.

The west end of I-A2 in Fairbanks doubles as the north end of I-A4 and Alaska State Route 3 (Parks Highway). The east end of I-A2 ties into I-A1 at SR 1 in Tok.
