Interstate 40

Interstate 40

Interstate 40 crosses the Sooner State from Texola to the Arkansas state line east of Roland. IH 40 replaced U.S. 66 east from the Texas Panhandle to Oklahoma City. Business Loops following old U.S. 66 join IH 40 with Erick, Sayre, Elk City, Clinton and El Reno.

Through Oklahoma City (OKC), IH 40 shifts south from Yukon and parallels the Oklahoma River east to IH 44. Construction completed in 2012 realigned IH 40 off of the aging Crosstown Expressway to the south of Downtown, onto a new route closer to the Oklahoma River. The realignment ties into the exchange joining IH 35/235 east of Bricktown, where IH 40 combines with IH 35 east for 1.01 miles.

Continuing southeast from IH 35, IH 40 passes through Del City and a portion of Midwest City ahead of Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City. IH 240, an urban loop west to IH 44 near Will Rogers World Airport, ties into IH 40 east from there. As approved by AASHTO in Fall 2021, IH 240 combines with IH 40 east to the Kickapoo Turnpike along an elongated beltway encircling OKC.

U.S. 270 overlaps with Interstate 40 east from OKC to Shawnee. U.S. 62 accompanies the freeway between Okemah and Henryetta, where another business loop is designated. Eastern reaches of IH 40 in Oklahoma parallel U.S. 266 from Checotah to Warner, and U.S. 64 from Warner to Roland.
