The Guide to Delaware State Route 12

Delaware 12 travels between the Maryland state line and Frederica by way of Felton. The state route dates to at least 1938 and remains relatively unchanged in its path since its inception into the state highway system.

Maryland 314 becomes Delaware 12 at the village of Whiteleysburg on the border. Whiteleysburg Road splits from Maryland 314 just west of the state line from State Road. The east-west roadway links the community with the town of Harrington and Delaware 14 to the southeast. Delaware 12 follows State Road briefly before turning northeasterly on Burnite Mill Road. Nine miles later Delaware 12 enters the incorporated town of Felton (pop. 784) via Main Street. Less than one mile separates the west end of town with junction U.S. 13 (Dupont Highway).

Delaware 12 becomes Midstate Road at U.S. 13 and Johnny Cake Landing Road outside of Frederica. The five mile drive between the two towns is bisected by junction Delaware 15 (Canterbury Road). In Frederica itself Delaware 12 travels Front Street and Frederica Road to its terminus at Delaware 1 (Coast Highway).

The eastbound beginning occurs at the state line where Maryland 314 transitions into Delaware 12. There are no photos of the western terminus at this time. If you have one, please send me an email.
Eastern Terminus
Frederica Road represents the original path of U.S. 113 through the town of Frederica. Delaware 12 utilizes the northern half of the road from Front Street to Delaware 1. The southern half of the roadway provides access to Delaware 1 southbound for Delaware 12 eastbound motorists. Pictured here is the approach to the eastern terminus at Delaware 1 (Coast Highway); this shield assembly was removed completely with the U.S. 113 truncation. Photos taken 04/13/04 & 08/05/07.
A stop sign governs the traffic movements of Delaware 12 (Frederica Road) eastbound at Delaware 1. U.S. 113 shields remained in place as of April 2004 for Delaware 1 despite the February 2004 truncation of the route southward to Milford; however they were long gone by 2007. Photos taken 04/13/04 & 08/05/07.
Delaware 1 southbound at the eastern terminus of Delaware 12 (Frederica Road). The east-west highway serves Killens Pond State Park five miles to the southwest. Photo taken 04/13/04.
A mist hangs over the horizon on Delaware 12 westbound at the first reassurance shield. Frederica Road enters the town limits of Frederica (pop. 648) at the Pratt Branch Spring Creek crossing 1,000 feet to the south. Photo taken 04/13/04.
