| Shortly after leaving the intersection with Weldin Road, Delaware 141 (Foulk Road) south splits with the off-ramp to U.S. 202 (Concord Pike). Motorists destined for U.S. 202 south to Interstate 95 and the city of Wilmington depart here as Delaware 141 south descends below Concord Pike above. Photo taken 05/19/07. |
| Delaware 141 reassurance shield posted ahead of the signalized intersection with the U.S. 202 northbound off-ramp to Delaware 141 and 261. Photo taken 05/19/07. |
| Delaware 141 south transitions from Foulk Road onto Route 141 Spur and quickly intersects West Park Road and the southbound off-ramp from U.S. 202 (Concord Pike). West Park Road travels south to Rockland Road north, East Park Road east, and Augustine Cut-off south respectively. Photo taken 12/23/06. |
| Heading northwest along Delaware 141 (Route 141 Spur) south. Route 141 Spur consists of a four-lane divided highway between U.S. 202 (Concord Pike) and the intersection with Childrens Drive / Powder Mill Road. Photo taken 12/23/06. |
| A second reassurance marker lies north of the future entrance to the Astra-Zenica campus along Route 141 Spur northbound. Photo taken 12/23/06. |
| Delaware 141 (Route 141 Spur) meets its original alignment at Powder Mill Road across from Childrens Drive. Childrens Drive stems west to Rockland Road at the Alfred DuPont Hospital for Children. Note the sign error here that directs Delaware 141 north onto Powder Mill Road. Powder Mill Road between U.S. 202 and Route 141 Spur become an unnumbered roadway upon completion of Route 141 Spur. Photo taken 12/23/06. |
| Childrens Drive originally curved northward from Rockland Road to meet Delaware 141 (Powder Mill Road) at a T intersection. The roadway was realigned along with Powder Mill Road to meet directly at Route 141 Spur, creating a large signalized intersection pictured here. Photo taken 05/19/07. |
Delaware 141 southbound after Childrens Drive. The mid-1990s reconstruction of Delaware 141 resulted in the creation of underpasses to eliminate the Rockland Road intersection. In the process Childrens Drive was created as a short connector between Delaware 141 (Powder Mill Road) and Rockland Road. The roadway links Powder Mill Road with the entrance to Alfred DuPont Hospital for Children (hence the name Childrens Lane) as well. Photo taken 04/26/04. |

Nearing the Dupont Experimental Station entrance on Delaware 141 (Powder Mill Road) alongside the Brandywine Creek. The waters of the creek flow through a deep valley between the experimental station and village of Greenville to the west. Delaware 141 straddles the valley between Alapocas Drive and the Tyler McConnel Bridge. Photo taken 04/26/04. |

Approaching Montchanin Road (Delaware 100) on the ascent from the Tyler McConnell Bridge. Montchanin Road provides access to Delaware 52 southbound (Kennett Pike) and constitutes Delaware 100 north of Delaware 141 to the Pennsylvania state line. A direct ramp exists between Barley Mill Road and Delaware 52 northbound beyond the upcoming intersection. A 2004 reconstruction project redesigned the Delaware 100 & 141 junction at Montchanin Road. The second photograph looks at Barley Mill Road after the majority of the roadwork was complete. Photos taken 04/26/04 & 12/21/04. |

Improvements are underway at the time of this photograph at the Delaware 141 junction with Delaware 100 (Montchanin Road). A Delaware 100 northbound shield guides motorists onto Montchanin Road toward Montchanin, Brandywine Creek State Park, and Winterthur. The second photograph displays the results of the intersection reconstruction. Photos taken 04/26/04 & 12/21/04. |

A multitude of signs exists at the Delaware 141 (Barley Mill Road) merge with Delaware 100 (Montchanin Road). Delaware 100 & 141 join together 1.5 miles between here and junction Delaware 48 (Lancaster Pike). Montchanin Road continues southward to junction Delaware 52 to provide the movements between Delaware 52 north to Delaware 141 south and Delaware 141 north to Delaware 52 south. The road was a part of Delaware 100 until 1989. Photo taken 04/26/04. |

This suite of photographs shows the completed Delaware 100 & 141 intersection reconstruction. Note the addition of ornamental traffic poles, a sidewalk, and landscaping as well as sign replacements for Delaware 52, 100, and 141. Historically speaking, an interchange was once proposed between Delaware 141 and Delaware 100 to compliment the partial-cloverleaf with Delaware 52 nearby. Photos taken 12/21/04. |
Delaware 100 & 141 (Barley Mill Road) southbound at the Delaware 52 (Kennett Pike). A partial-cloverleaf interchange facilitates the movements between Delaware 100 & 141 and the Kennett Pike along a short freeway section of Barley Mill Road. Delaware 52 northbound travels to Greenville, Centerville, and Fairville, Pennsylvania en route to junction U.S. 1 (Baltimore Pike). Photo taken 12/21/04. |

Gore point sign and Delaware 52 shield posted at the northbound ramp to Kennett Pike from Delaware 100 & 141 southbound. Delaware 100 & 141 enter a brief expressway segment of Barley Mill Road between Montchanin Road and Old Barley Mill Road underneath Delaware 52. Photo taken 12/21/04. |
Southbound Delaware 100 & 141 (Centre Road) approaching Delaware 48 (Lancaster Pike). Here Delaware 100 departs Delaware 141 for Delaware 48 east into the city of Wilmington. The state route originally followed Dupont Road northward from Lancaster Pike to Delaware 52 (Kennett Pike) and Montchanin Road). In 1989 however the state route saw realignment onto Delaware 48 and 141 to bypass a residential area on Dupont Road itself. Photo taken 04/26/04. |
Delaware 48 & 100 south shield assembly at Lancaster Pike on Delaware 141 south. Delaware 48 provides a four-lane corridor into central Wilmington from Centre Road and points north. Expansion of Lancaster Pike extends the four lane section of Delaware 48 northward to two miles to Hercules Road. The additional capacity accommodates growth of the Hockessin area of northern New Castle County. Delaware 48 ends at Delaware 41 (Newport Gap Pike) four miles northward outside of Hockessin itself. Photo taken 04/26/04. |
Delaware 141 (Centre Road) southbound at junction Delaware 34 (Faulkland Road) west of Elsmere. Delaware 34 comprises a short east-west route between Delaware 100 and Wilmington and Duncan Road near Brandywine Springs State Park. The highway serves various facilities of the Dupont Corporation and older suburbs of Wilmington along the way. Photo taken 12/21/04. |
Delaware 141 (Ferris Road) southbound at Woodward Avenue and the beginning of the Newport Freeway. The Newport Freeway travels over nearby Delaware 2 (Kirkwood Highway) and does not feature a direct connection. Therefore drivers bound for Kirkwood Highway are directed onto Ferris Road into the Prices Corner area. Photo taken 03/20/04. |
Ferris Road splits from Delaware 141 southbound at the Newport Freeway and becomes a southbound side frontage road. The two-lane road facilitates traffic to both Delaware 2 (Kirkwood Highway) east and Centerville Road below both Delaware 2 and 141. Speed limits on Delaware 141 itself increase from 35 to 50 mph here. Photo taken 12/21/04. |
A direct ramp between Ferris Road and Delaware 2 east exists alongside Delaware 141 southbound. Hillside Avenue ties into the frontage road in this southbound facing scene. Several homes line the roadway. Photo taken 03/20/04. |
Delaware 2 west Newark guide sign at the short access ramp. Kirkwood Highway ascends eastward over Centerville Road through the Prices Corner area. From there Delaware 2 continues westward 6.5 miles into the city limits of Newark. Photo taken 03/20/04. |
Ferris Road otherwise turns westward toward Centerville and Greenbank Roads. Centerville Road provides an alternate route northward to Delaware 34 (Faulkland Road), Delaware 48 (Lancaster Pike), and Delaware 82 (Campbell Road) over Delaware 41 or 141. Photo taken 03/20/04. |
Sign bridge at the intersection of Centerville, Ferris, and Greenbank Roads. Centerville Road travels north-south between Delaware 62 (Boxwood Road) and Delaware 34 through Prices Corner parallel to Delaware 141. Greenbank Road stems westward from here to Delaware 41 (Newport Gap Pike) with a short connector to Delaware 2 (Kirkwood Highway) via Albertson Boulevard. A direct ramp from Centerville Road however joins the Delaware 141 northbound off-ramp to Delaware 2 east 0.4 miles to the south as well. Photo taken 03/20/04. |
Delaware 2 & 41 overlap between the Newport Freeway and Newport Gap Pike intersections of the Kirkwood Highway. Before the Delaware 141 was extended southward to New Castle, Delaware 41 continued along the Newport Gap Pike into Newport and southward to New Castle. The creation of the freeway displaced the need for Delaware 41 and thus the route was shorted to the interchange at Delaware 2. Pictured here is the southbound end shield of the highway posted along the southbound on-ramp to Delaware 141 from Delaware 2 east. Photo taken 03/23/04. |
The Newport Freeway and Delaware 141 features upcoming guide signs between Prices Corner and New Castle. Depicted here is the first southbound list including Exits 5, 4A, and 3B/A. Auxiliary lanes travel between the Exit 5 and 6 ramps in both respective directions. Photo taken 03/23/04. |
The Delaware 2 on-ramps to Delaware 141 form the exit-only lane for Delaware 62 (Exit 5). Note the old format retained from the original signing practices along Delaware 141 indicating "Exit Only" as "Must Exit". All signs along the Newport Freeway were replaced between 1999 and 2002. Photo taken 03/23/04. |
0.25-mile sign bridge for Exit 5 on Delaware 141 southbound. Delaware 62 overtakes the former Delaware 41 alignment along Newport Gap Pike between Old Capitol Trail and Boxwood Road. The state route turns eastward at Delaware 141 onto Boxwood Road. A Delaware 4 shield is missing from the left-hand panel. Photo taken 03/23/04. |
Exit 5 leaves Delaware 141 southbound for the intersection of Boxwood Road and Newport Gap Pike. Boxwood Road carries Delaware 62 1.2 miles eastward to Delaware 4 (Maryland Avenue) and the Richardson Park community. Northward Newport Gap Pike returns Delaware 62 northward to Prices Corner and junction Delaware 2 & 41. South of Delaware 62, Newport Gap Pike splits between a north and southbound component, acting as the frontage roads for the Delaware 141 depressed freeway into Newport. Photo taken 03/23/04. |
The Newport Freeway reduces to four lanes overall as it descends below the street grid of Belvedere above. A second upcoming exits sign features Delaware 4 (Exit 4A), South James Street (Exit 4B), and Interstate 95 & 495 (Exits 3B/A). Note that the exit number suffixes are out of order between the four off-ramps. Photo taken 03/23/04. |
The Exit 5 on-ramp forms the Exit 4A exit-only lane at the Burnside Boulevard over crossing. The upcoming off-ramp serves downtown Newport and the one-way couplet of Delaware 4 (Justis & Main Streets). Photo taken 03/23/04. |
Delaware 141 southbound at Exit 5 (Delaware 4) at the Highland Avenue overpass. Delaware 4 constitutes a four-lane highway between Stanton (junction Delaware 7) and the city of Wilmington to the east. In the small town of Newport the state route splits between Justis Street (westbound) and Main Street (eastbound. The southbound off-ramp to Delaware 4 merges onto James Street southbound ahead of the Justis Street intersection. Photo taken 03/23/04. |
Peering southward from the Burnside Boulevard overpass at the Delaware 141 depressed freeway. Six lanes travel between the Delaware 4 & 62 off-ramps with the addition of auxiliary lanes. The freeway opened to traffic in 1979. Photo taken 06/00. |
The Newport Freeway ascends above downtown Newport along a four-lane viaduct. The elevated highway cut a swath through the heart of Newport during the 1960s on its path between Prices Corner and Interstate 95. The construction of the highway alleviated congestion below but also created an eyesore for the community. Pictured here is the 0.5-mile sign bridge for Exit 4B (South James Street). Photo taken 04/17/04. |
The Delaware 4 on-ramp from Main Street to Delaware 141 south adds a third lane for Exit 3B (Interstate 95 south). The carriageways of the Newport Freeway diverge between Newport and Interstate 295 to accommodate some of the ramps between Delaware 141 and Interstate 95-295-495. Photo taken 03/20/04. |
The Exit 4B off-ramp is nothing more than a right-turn onto the adjacent South James Street. Old Airport Road continues southward from the ramp to a collection of bone yards before dead ending at the Christina Marsh. The road was cut by the creation of the Delaware Turnpike between Newport and New Castle County Airport. Note that a stop sign governs the "on-ramp" from Exit 4B onto Delaware 141 south. Photo taken 03/23/04. |
Exit 3B departs Delaware 141 southbound for Interstate 95 and the Delaware Turnpike. Exit 3A leaves the freeway from the left in 0.25 miles at the Interstate 95 & U.S. 202 southbound on-ramp onto the Newport Freeway. Interstate 95 southbound below Delaware 141 here is notorious for traffic delays. Congestion occurs due to the close proximity of on-ramps from Interstate 495 south, Interstate 295 south, Delaware 141 north, and Delaware 141 south. The freeway otherwise carries eight lanes between Delaware 141 to junction Delaware 1-7-58 across the Christina Marsh. Photo taken 03/23/04. |
Southbound at the Interstate 95 & U.S. 202 and 495 northbound off-ramp (Exit 3A). Drivers departing the freeway here merge with the U.S. 202 & Delaware 141 northbound loop ramp before encountering the freeway below. Unfortunately each ramp carries just one lane and the joining of the two often results in accidents due to the volumes of traffic using the Wilmington and Philadelphia bound ramps. Replacement panels to the right were simply "pasted" over the original signs for both Exit 2 (Interstate 295 north) and U.S. 13 & 40 (Dupont Highway) in 2002. Photo taken 03/20/04. |
Now with U.S. 202 on board, the Newport Freeway draws to a close at the Exit 2 cloverleaf ramp to Interstate 295 north (Exit 2). The loop descends onto a collector/distributor roadway below before merging onto the Interstate 295 mainline. There is no access between U.S. 202 & Delaware 141 northbound onto Interstate 295, nor is there an Exit 2 in that direction. Note also that the Exit 2 panels retain "New Jersey" as a control point for Interstate 295 instead of "NJ-NY". 5.6 miles separate Exit 2 from the state line via the Delaware Memorial Bridge. Photo taken 04/17/04. |
Airport Road intersects U.S. 202 & Delaware 141 at the south end of the Newport Freeway. A traffic light governs the movements between southbound and the two-lane roadway. Airport Road loops northward from Delaware 37 (Commons Boulevard) to U.S. 202 & Delaware 141 northbound (Basin Road) to the left. Photo taken 04/03/04. |
The cloverleaf between Basin Road and U.S. 13 & 40 is quite antiquated with sharp curves and limited shoulders. Additionally businesses reside within the three loop ramps and there is no ramp at all between Delaware 141 northbound and the Dupont Highway southbound. New signs were installed at the junction between 2001 and 2004. Depicted here is the Exit 1A overhead for U.S. 13 north & 40 east for Wilmington and the Delaware Memorial Bridge (Interstate 295). Photo taken 08/31/04. |
Delaware 141 underwent reconstruction between 2003 and 2004 between Jay Road and Delaware 9 & 273 (Frenchtown Road). The four-lane arterial passes through Wilmington Manor between U.S. 13 & 40 and the southern terminus at New Castle. Junction shields are posted for the upcoming Delaware 9 & 273 intersection on the approach to the end. Photo taken 04/03/04. |
Trailblazers for U.S. 13 & 40 direct drivers westward onto Delaware 273 (Frenchtown Road) to the Hares Corner intersection. Unfortunately that intersection is extremely busy and long waits at the traffic signal there for Delaware 273 are highly unlikely. However since there is no longer a direct connection between Delaware 141 north and U.S. 13 south & 40 west, no other better alternative exists. Photo taken 04/03/04. |
Basin Road carries Delaware 141 to its end at the intersection of Frenchtown Road (Delaware 273 west), Washington Avenue (Delaware 9 south), and Delaware Avenue (Delaware 9 north & 273 east). Welcome to the town of New Castle. Washington Avenue continues the trajectory of Basin Road into downtown New Castle via Delaware 9. Delaware 9 north & 273 east straddle the northern reaches of town via Delaware Avenue, Ferry Cutoff Street, and 6th Street. Photo taken 04/03/04. |
The end shield of Delaware 141 replaced the U.S. 13 & 40 trailblazers in the Delaware 9 & 273 shield assembly on Basin Road south. Note the change between the above photograph and here. The cosigning of Delaware 9 & 273 is a remnant from when Delaware 9 used 7th Street-South Street-6th Street through central New Castle to Ferry Cutoff Street (Delaware 273). Delaware 273 remains signed east of Delaware 141 most likely as a convenience for area residents. Photo taken 12/19/01. |

Centerville Road southbound at the Boxwood Road GM Plant and northbound on-ramp for the Newport Freeway (Delaware 141). The west exit of the assembly plant directly connects with the freeway ramp. Centerville Road parallels Delaware 141 north between Delaware 62 (Boxwood Road) and Prices Corner. Photo taken 04/24/04. |
Shield assembly on Centerville Road southbound on the approach to junction Delaware 62 (Boxwood Road). The two-way roadway becomes one-way northbound at the upcoming traffic light. Traffic destined for Delaware 141 southbound turns west on Delaware 62 over the freeway than south on Newport Gap Pike to a nearby on-ramp. Photo taken 04/24/04. |
Delaware 62 was commissioned in 1985 along Boxwood Road and Newport Gap Pike (old Delaware 41) to join Delaware 4 (Maryland Avenue) and Prices Corner. The Newport Gap Pike splits between one-way couplets adjacent to the Newport Freeway between Newport and Boxwood Road. Two additional entrances to the GM assembly plant are found along Delaware 62 east of Delaware 141. Photo taken 04/24/04. |

The southbound on-ramp to Delaware 141 from Newport Gap Pike and Delaware 62 (Boxwood Road). Newport Gap Pike elevates above the freeway below en route through Belvedere and the corporate limits of Newport. The name of the highway relates to the Delaware 41 & Pennsylvania 41 roadway between Newport, Delaware and Gap, Pennsylvania (junction U.S. 30). Photo taken 04/17/04. |

Airport Road northbound ends at U.S. 202 & Delaware 141 on the south side of the interchange complex with Interstates 95-295-495. The Newport Freeway ends at this traffic signal/at-grade intersection to the south. U.S. 202 & Delaware 141 south next meet Delaware 37 on the drive to junction U.S. 13 & 40 (Dupont Highway).
