The Guide to Delaware State Route 491

Delaware 491 is not included in the state highway system officially. However a Delaware 491 shield was posted along Delaware 92 (Naamans Road) westbound at Hickman Road in 1993 out of convience for motorists wishing to access Pennsylvania 491 (Naamans Creek Road). The 0.36 mile routing of Hickman Road is not actually a state route but is state maintained. Thus the Delaware 491 north shield should display "TO Pennsylvania 491" instead.

Western terminus
Hickman Road westbound 0.3 miles from Delaware 92 (Naamans Road) at the Delaware County, Pennsylvania line. Pennsylvania 491 (Naamans Creek Road) begins here and continues 3.2 miles to Booths Corner and junction Pennsylvania 261 (Foulk Road). Eastern Terminus
Delaware 92 (Naamans Road) westbound at Ridge Road ahead of the westbound beginning of Delaware 491 (Hickman Road). Ridge Road stems northward Delaware 92 to Marcus Hook, Trainer, and Chester, Pennsylvania. Motorists wishing to access Hickman Road northbound from Delaware 92 eastbound must U-turn at Ridge Road since there is no direct access to Delaware 491. Photo taken 04/10/04.
Delaware 491 (Hickman Road) departs Delaware 92 westbound ahead of the Tristate Mall. Hickman Road enters the state of Pennsylvania 0.3 miles to the north. A few homes and a storage business lie along Delaware 491 between Naamans Road and the state line. Photo taken 04/10/04.
Pennsylvania 491 Western Terminus
Pennsylvania 491 (Naamans Creek Road) constitutes 5.6 miles between U.S. 202 (Concord Pike) and the Delaware state line. The east-west highway ends at Johnsons Corner 0.75 miles north of the state line on U.S. 202. A typical junction/end shield assembly for Pennsylvania 491 resides on the approach to Concord Pike.
