History
Roughly between 1979 and 1982, Interstate 895 existed in the state of Delaware. The designation was applied to current Interstate 95 between the ends of Interstate 495 through the city of Wilmington and associated metropolitan area. Interstate 95 itself was relocated during the same time period onto Interstate 495 east of the city. The reasoning behind the switch involved a major reconstruction project of the Wilmington viaduct and freeway for the original Interstate 95. Construction squeezed traffic down to one lane in each direction and thus it was thought that moving Interstate 95 onto the bypass would ease through traffic congestion through the area. The number Interstate 895 was temporary and upon completion of the project, Interstate 495 was restored and Interstate 95 relocated back through the city.
Routing
Interstate 895 constituted all of Interstate 95 between the Interstate 495 southern terminus at Newport and northern terminus at Claymont.
