Interstate 10 West - St. Charles Parish to Ascension Parish

Interstate 10 west
Two lanes depart for Interstate 310 southbound at Exit 220. The 11.25-mile Interstate links Interstate 10 with U.S. 90 at the community of Boutte. The freeway includes the 1983 opened Hale Boggs Mississippi River, a cable-stayed bridge between Destrehan and Luling. Photo taken 04/20/12.

Interstate 10 travels nine miles worth of elevated highway from Kenner west to Laplace. The viaduct, in conjunction with five miles of Interstate 310 and 23 miles of Interstate 55, represents the longest continuous bridge in the world at 38 miles. Interstate 10 passes over a levee and reaches Bonnet Carre Spillway. The Spillway was constructed in 1931 as a safeguard against Mississippi River flooding downstream. When in operation, a portion of the water flowing down the Mississippi River is diverted through the spillway into Lake Pontchartrain.1 Photo taken 11/20/08.

Exit 210 is signed with the control city of Hammond, the location where Interstate 55 meets Interstate 12 (Exit 29). A two-lane off-ramp departs Interstate 10 westbound for Interstate 55 north at Exit 210. Interstate 55 merges with U.S. 51 in less than a mile with the two routes sharing a viaduct northward along a narrow strip of land between Lakes Maurepas and Pontchartrain. Alongside the elevated freeway is the original two-lane U.S. 51. Interchanges with the old alignment exist at Rudduck (Exit 7) and Manchac (Exit 15). Attached to the bridge that carries Interstate 55 southbound to Interstate 10 east is the overhead for the Exit 209 ramp departure. Exit 209 consists of a diamond interchange with U.S. 51 (Main Street) at Laplace. U.S. 51 ends three miles to the south at U.S. 61 (Airline Highway) and travels overall 1,286 miles to Hurley, Wisconsin. Photo taken 08/23/03.

Louisiana 641 travels 6.32 miles south from Interstate 10 to Louisiana 44 (Jefferson Highway) within the community of Gramercy. The state highway provides a direct link between the Veterans Memorial Bridge (Louisiana 3213) between Gramercy and Wallace (junction Louisiana 18). The 1995-opened bridge begins just south of the Louisiana 641 junctions with U.S. 61 (Airline Highway) and Louisiana 3125 and links with LA-3213 south to LA-3217 (River Parishes Highway). The freeway enters Ascension Parish after a brief trek through northern Saint James Parish. The first interchange in Ascension joins Interstate 10 with U.S. 61 (Airline Highway) at Exit 187. A four-ramp directional interchange facilitates the movements between like directions of Interstate 10 and U.S. 61 (Airline Highway). Direct access from westbound is only available to U.S. 61 northbound and from U.S. 61 southbound onto Interstate 10 east. U.S. 61 travels four miles north of here to the community of Sorrento. The state highway parallels the Interstate 10 corridor westward to the city of Baton Rouge for a distance of 28.7 miles. The state highway ends at Interstate 10, Exit 155B near downtown Baton Rouge.
