Leaving the interchange (Exit 414) with Holly Shelter Road (SR 1002) for Castle Hayne, I-40 continues 1.5 miles south to Interstate 140 (Exits 416A/B).

The first sign for the pending end of Interstate 40 stands north of I-140. An adjacent supplemental sign references Shallotte and Jacksonville, destinations along U.S. 17 beyond the respective ends of I-140.

Completed on December 19, 2017, I-140/NC 140 encircles the Wilmington area along a 25 mile long bypass for U.S. 17. U.S. 17 was relocated from Wilmington to overlap with the initial section of I-140 east from U.S. 421 to Scotts Hill. The route was eventually rerouted along Market Street across the city.

Interstate 40 passes over Gordon Road at the loop ramp (Exit 420) for U.S. 117/NC 132 north (North College Road). Gordon Road heads west to Kerr Avenue and east to U.S. 17 Business (Market Street) and U.S. 17 (Military Cutoff Road).

Prior to 2004, when U.S. 117 was realigned from NC 133 onto College Road from the west, NC 132 traveled solo north from Exit 420. The state route extends south 9.8 miles to U.S. 421 by Silver Lake.
