Interstate 64 West (Hampton Roads - Hampton and Newport News)

Interstate 64 & U.S. 60 West
Westbound on Interstate 64 and U.S. 60 crossing the James River via the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel. Opened in 1957, the facility saw expansion from two to four lanes in 1976. The crossing links the Willoughby Spit area of Norfolk with Phoebus in Hampton. Photo taken 03/25/01.
Descending into the tunnel portion of Interstate 64 and U.S. 60 westbound under the James River. The tunnels of Interstate 64, Interstate 664, and U.S. 13 are required due to the volume of ships traveling to and from the Hampton Roads navy bases and port facilities. Photo taken 03/25/01. Second photo taken 03/21/09.
Leaving the HRBT, the next interchange on I-64/US 60 West is at VA 169 East/Mallory St (Exit 268). VA 169 connects to US 258 and VA 143 north of Fort Monroe before going to Buckroe Beach. Photo taken 03/21/09.
I-64/US 60 West at VA 169 East/Mallory St (Exit 168). I-64/US 60 is the eastern terminus of VA 169. The next interchange is for US 60 West and VA 143 (Exit 268) in 1/2 mile. I-64 also widens to 6 lanes after this interchange. Photo taken 03/21/09.
I-64/US 60 West split at VA 143 (Exit 267). East of here VA 143 connects to VA 169 and US 258 north of Fort Monroe. West of here VA 143 mostly parallels I-64 until its west end north of Williamsburg near Camp Peary at I-64 (Exit 238). US 60 also mainly parallels I-64 from here to Richmond along with VA 143 up to Williamsburg. US 60 and VA 143 are primarily city streets in Hampton and Downtown Newport News before both become major boulevards for most of the rest of Newport News as US 60 uses Warwick Blvd and VA 143 uses Jefferson Ave. The next three interchanges are at VA 134/Armistead Ave and former VA 167/La Salle Ave (VA 167 is still on the VDOT map as of the 2008-2010 edition) (Exits 265B-A), I-664 South (Exit 264), and US 258 and VA 134 South/Mercury Blvd (Exits 263B-A). Photo taken 03/21/09.
Interstate 64 West
Now 1 mile before VA 134/Armistead Ave and former VA 167/La Salle Ave (Exits 265B-A). VA 134 follows Armistead Ave south of I-64 to end at US 60/VA 143. North of I-64 VA 134 follows Armistead Ave north to US 258/Mercury Blvd before duplexing with US 258 in the Hampton Coliseum area. Photo taken 03/21/09.
Now only 1/2 mile before the VA 134 interchange, VA 134 actually travels north-south throughout most of its route with the exception of the US 258 portion even though it is signed east-west. La Salle Ave (former VA 167) travels north of I-64 to Langley Air Force Base. Photo taken 03/21/09.

I-64 West at the VA 134 West/Armistead Ave and La Salle Ave (Exit 265B). Photo taken 03/21/09.
I-64 West at VA 134 East/Armistead Ave and La Salle Ave (Exit 265A). Up ahead is the exit for I-664 South (Exit 264) and I-64 West leaving the Hampton Roads Beltway. Photo taken 03/21/09.
I-64 West at the exit for I-664 South (Exit 264). I-664 South takes over the Hampton Roads Beltway Outer Loop from Interstate 64 west. I-664's entire route from here at I-64, through Downtown Newport News and the Monitor Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel, and through eastern Suffolk and northwest Chesapeake before ending at I-264 and I-64's (Exit 299) eastern terminus in the Bowers Hill section of Chesapeake is included in the Hampton Roads Beltway. I-64 West finally leaves the Hampton Roads Beltway as two lanes depart for I-664 South. Photo taken 03/21/09.
After leaving the Hampton Roads Beltway, the next interchange on I-64 West is for US 258 / VA 134 South (Exits 263B-A). Between the beginning of the HOV lane ahead and Hampton Roads Center Pkwy (Exit 261B), I-64 widens to 8 thru lanes (2 HOV-2 lanes [1 in each direction] during peak hours) and up to 12 overall lanes between exits from I-664 (Exit 264) to the VA 134 North Exit (Exit 262B) after the completion of the Coliseum Central Highway Project in 2006. On the other hand, I-64 stays 8 lanes (2 HOV-2 [1 in each direction]) from VA 134 until VA 143/Jefferson Ave (Exits 255B-A). Photo taken 03/21/09.
I-64 West at the exit to US 258 North/VA 134 South (Exit 263A). The Hampton Coliseum can also be accessed via US 258 North and VA 134 South/Mercury Blvd via the first signal north (east) of I-64 at Coliseum Dr. VA 134 multiplexes with I-64 from US 258 to the next exit at Magruder Blvd (Exit 262B). Photo taken 03/21/09.
US 258 and VA 134 multiplex on Mercury Blvd east of I-64 to Armistead Ave. US 258, while it signed north-south, turns southeast east of Armistead Ave towards its northern (even though it is going south, terminus at Fort Monroe) and connects former VA 167/La Salle Ave and VA 278/King St to Langley Air Force Base. Before reaching Fort Monroe, US 258 intersects VA 169, which goes to Buckroe Beach, twice and has an intersection with the southern terminus of VA 143 before ending at the gate to Fort Monroe. Photo taken 03/21/09.
Just ahead is the exit for US 258 South/Mercury Blvd (Exit 263A) towards the James River Bridge. US 258 intersects US 17 and VA 143 at Jefferson Ave (US 17 and VA 143 have a duplex between US 258/Mercury Blvd and VA 312/J Clyde Morris Blvd). US 17 and US 258 multiplex past an interchange with US 60/Warwick Blvd over the James River Bridge (with VA 32 beyond US 60) before US 258/VA 32 and US 17 split in Isle of Wight County just northwest of Suffolk. Photos taken 03/21/09.
The next three interchanges on I-64 West are VA 134 North/Magruder Blvd(Exit 262B), Hampton Roads Center Pkwy WB(Exit 261A), and US 17/J Clyde Morris Blvd(Exits 258B-A). The I-64/VA 134 multiplex is brief as the routes split up ahead at Exit 262B. VA 134 follows Magruder Blvd(in Newport News) and Hampton Hwy(in York Co.) and has an SPUI interchange at Hampton Roads Center Pkwy before VA 172, which connects VA 134 to Langley AFB, NASA, and Poquoson. VA 134 also intersects VA 171 before ending at US 17. Note that traffic wanting to head east on Hampton Roads Center Pkwy must use VA 134 North(Exit 262B) as there is no access from I-64 West to Hampton Roads Center Pkwy East. Photo taken 03/21/09.
Two lanes exit off I-64 West at VA 134 North/Magruder Blvd(Exit 262B). The right-lane is exit only while the second lane accesses VA 134 North before ending just past the exit. I-64 remains eight lanes from just past VA 134(Exit 262B) to VA 143(Exits 255B-A). The blank guide sign on the left should say "I-64 West, Williamsburg, Richmond"; however VDOT decided to leave it blank after finishing the Coliseum Central Highway project back in 2006. Photo taken 03/21/09.
The next exit on I-64 West is at Hampton Roads Center Pkwy West(Exit 261A). Note that the exit is only for WB traffic as there is no direct access from I-64 West to Hampton Roads Center Pkwy East. Traffic wishing to access Hampton Roads Center Pkwy East should have exited at the VA 134 North exit(Exit 262B). Photo taken 03/21/09.
Hampton Roads Center Pkwy is an expressway located mainly in the city of Hampton and in a small portion of Newport News. It exists from VA 306/Harpersville Rd and US 17/VA 143 in Newport News west of I-64 and has interchanges at I-64 and VA 134 before ending at a signal at Armistead Ave east of VA 134. The Hampton Roads Center Pkwy was only recently completed early in the 2000s. Photo taken 03/21/09.
I-64 West at the exit for Hampton Roads Center Pkwy WB(Exit 261A). VA 306/Harpersville Rd west of US 17/VA 143(Jefferson Ave) connects Hampton Roads Center Pkwy to US 60/Warwick Blvd. Photo taken 03/21/09.
Now 1 mile east of US 17/J Clyde Morris Blvd(Exits 258B-A) on I-64 West. I-64 leaves Hampton and enters Newport News between Hampton Roads Center Pkwy and US 17. Photo taken 03/21/09.
Now 1/2 mile east of US 17(Exits 258B-A), US 17 follows J Clyde Morris Blvd north towards Yorktown and becomes George Washington Memorial Highway in York County. In York Co. US 17 intersects VA 171/Victory Blvd, VA 134(actually an interchange), VA 173, VA 105, and VA 238 on the way to Yorktown before crossing the George P. Coleman Bridge into Gloucester Co.(tolls are $2 for cars/passenger vehicles and are only collected northbound). Photo taken 03/21/09.
I-64 West at US 17 North/J Clyde Morris Blvd(Exit 258B) towards Yorktown and Gloucester Co. US 17 also accesses the Colonial Pkwy in Yorktown, which is where the US won the American Revolution back in 1781. Photo taken 03/21/09.
I-64 West at US 17 South/J Clyde Morris Blvd(Exit 258A). The first photo is unusual as normally there are not two "1/4 mile" signs for any exit that I know of outside of here. On the other hand, US 17 follows J Clyde Morris Blvd south to VA 143/Jefferson Ave and VA 312, which connects US 17 and takes over J Clyde Morris Blvd to US 60/Warwick Blvd. US 17 and VA 143 duplex to US 258 where US 17 follows US 258 past an interchange with US 60 as US 17, US 258, and VA 32 multiplex crossing the James River Bridge into Isle of Wight Co. Photos taken 03/21/09.
The next three interchanges are VA 171(Exits 256B-A), VA 143/Jefferson Ave(Exits 255B-A) and VA 105/Fort Eustis Blvd(Exits 250B-A). Now closing in on VA 171(Exits 256B-A) the first overhead only states that VA 171 only exits east of I-64. On the other hand, the second overhead contradicts the first overhead by showing a VA 171 West shield for Oyster Point Rd. In reality VA 171 exists west of I-64 along Oyster Point Rd to end at VA 143/Jefferson Ave even though VA 171 is unposted west of I-64. Photos taken 03/21/09.
I-64 West at VA 171 East/Victory Blvd(Exit 256B). VA 171 connects I-64 to Poquoson and intersects US 17 and VA 134 west of Poquoson and intersects VA 172 in Poquoson before ending at a dead-end next to the Back River. VA 171 is an expressway between I-64 and VA 172; VA 171 is also a super-2 expressway on a 4-lane ROW between VA 134 and VA 172. Photo taken 03/21/09.
Now at the exit for VA 171 West/Oyster Point Rd(Exit 256A), VA 171 here is not signed for going west on Oyster Point Rd contradictory to the earlier overhead even though VA 171 does follow Oyster Point Rd to VA 143/Jefferson Ave. Photo taken 03/21/09.
The next interchange for I-64 West is at VA 143/Jefferson Ave(Exits 255B-A). For access to the Newport News-Willliamsburg Int'l Airport, use VA 143 West(Exit 255B). Photo taken 03/21/09.
Now 1/2 mile east of VA 143/Jefferson Ave(Exits 255B-A), the VA 143 interchange is a modified cloverleaf with C/D Roads on both directions of I-64. Photo taken 01/26/09.
I-64 West at the exit for VA 143/Jefferson Ave(Exits 255B-A). After this interchange, I-64 goes from 8 lanes(2 HOV-2, 1 in each direction) to 4 lanes from here all the way to VA 156/Airport Dr(Exits 197B-A) in Henrico County. Plans are to widen this section to 6-8 lanes in the distant future. Photo taken 01/26/09.
Now looking at the VA 143 West(Exit 255B) exit from the I-64 West C/D Road. VA 143 continues to parallel I-64 between here and its west end at I-64(Exit 238) outside of Williamsburg. Photo taken 03/21/09.
Now at the VA 143 East(Exit 255A) exit, the view is from the I-64 West mainline. VAs 143 accesses the western terminus of VA 171/Oyster Point Rd and the Jefferson Lab east of here. Photo taken 01/26/09.
Now on I-64 West, 1 mile east of VA 105/Fort Eustis Blvd(Exits 250B-A). As stated before I-64 has narrowed to 4 lanes overall after VA 143/Jefferson Ave(Exits 255B-A) all the way to VA 156/Airport Dr(Exits 197B-A) in Henrico County. Photo taken 01/26/09.
At the exit for VA 105 East/Fort Eustis Blvd(Exit 250B), VA 105 immediately has a signal at VA 143/Jefferson Ave before traveling on a super-2 expressway(planned to be widened to 4 lanes) through Newport News Park before ending at US 17 south of Yorktown. Photo taken 03/21/09.
I-64 West at VA 105 West/Fort Eustis Blvd(Exit 250A). West of I-64 VA 105 has an interchange with US 60/Warwick Blvd before ending at the gate to Fort Eustis. The next three exits on I-64 West are for VA 238(Exit 247), VA 143 West(Exit 243B) and Busch Gardens(Exit 243A). Photo taken 01/26/09.
Closing in on VA 238(Exit 247) on I-64 West, VA 238 connects to US 60 in the Lee Hall section of Newport News west of I-64. On the other hand, east of I-64 VA 238 immediately intersects VA 143/Jefferson Ave before connecting to US 17 in the Yorktown area before ending at the US Naval Supply Center gate. Photo taken 01/26/09.
Now at the offramp for VA 238(Exit 247) on I-64 West, an onramp from VA 143 West connects to the interstate ahead(not photographed). Photo taken 01/26/09.
