A flyover ramp (Exit 423D) separates from I-70/U.S. 24-40-169 west over the Kansas River to Fairfax Trafficway north. Fairfax Trafficway branches northeast from 3rd Street below Minnesota Avenue to the Fairfax Industrial District along the Missouri River.
10/07/21

I-70 curves southwest as Exit 423C departs for Minnesota Avenue west to Downtown Kansas City and a short freeway spur north to 3rd Street and Washington Boulevard west. State Avenue parallels Minnesota Avenue one block to the north as the historic alignment of U.S. 24, U.S. 40 and U.S. 73.
10/07/21

I-70/U.S. 24-40 west and U.S. 169 south straddle the bluff line between the Riverview community and railroad lines along the Kansas River to Central Avenue. This section of freeway opened in 1962.
10/07/21

Central Avenue crosses over Interstate 70 east to the Central Avenue Bridge spanning the Kansas River. The two level deck truss bridge was built in 1918 and rehabilitated in 1983 and 2008.2

A diamond interchange (Exit 422C) joins I-70 with Pacific Avenue just south of Central Avenue, at an industrial area of north Armourdale.

Three lane viaducts carrying the I-670 mainline pass overhead as I-70 curves westward along the Muncie Expressway to Exit 422B. There is no direct access to I-670 east from I-70 west. 18th Street north to Quindaro Boulevard was once designated as K-58 and later as U.S. 69/169. K-58 also ran south along the 18th Street Expressway to Roeland Park and Fairview. U.S. 69 lines the freeway south from the cloverleaf interchange with I-70 to I-35 in south Kansas City.
10/30/16

Interstate 635 vastly replaced the 18th Street Expressway as the primary through route between Johnson County and central Kansas City. The shift of traffic away from the expressway fueled the push to remove tolls along it, which took place in 1991. The toll road was built by the Kansas Turnpike Authority in the 1950s.

A Kansas Turnpike sign once marked the beginning of maintenance along I-70 west from the exchange at Exit 420.
