Interstate 94 branches northeast from Interstate 90 at Billings to Forsyth, Miles City, Glendive and Wibaux along a 249.377 mile route in eastern parts of the Glacier State. The route replaced U.S. 10 from Billings east to Fargo, North Dakota.
Beginning at a trumpet interchange on the east side of Billings, Interstate 94 climbs northeast to run along the north slopes of hills leading toward the parallel Yellowstone River. The rural freeway passes south of Huntley and Ballantine before finally converging with old U.S. 10 and the parallel BNSF Railroad line near Pompeys Pillar.
I-94 remains parallel to the Yellowstone River, old U.S. 10 and the BNSF Railroad to the south to Custer. MT 47 ties into the freeway from the south nearby, as the freeway proceeds east across The Bighorn River into Treasure County. The ensuing stretch takes I-94 away from the Yellowstone River and across a series of hills. The route passes two miles south of Hysham, seat and largest town in Treasure County.
East into Rosebud County, Interstate 94 straddles the hillside rising south of Howard Valley and the Yellowstone River to the city of Forsyth. Forsyth is the largest city along I-94 east from Billings. A business loop formerly served the Rosebud County seat.
Beyond Forsyth, Interstate 94 bee lines eastward while remaining south of the Yellowstone River. U.S. 12 accompanies this stretch as part of a 47.5 mile overlap. The two bend northward from Hathaway to Miles City, where Business Loop I-94 branches north along the former route of U.S. 10, U.S. 12 and U.S. 312 to the city center.
Continuing northeast from Miles City, Interstate 94 and old U.S. 10 intertwine to the Prairie County line and the town of Terry. Both roads squeeze between the plateau of Broadview Bench and the Yellowstone River east to Fallon, where they cross the river for the first time.
Staying west of the Yellowstone River, Interstate 94 extends north to West Glendive and Glendive. The largest city in eastern Montana and seat of Dawson County, Glendive is served by a Business Loop from I-94 and connected with points north via Montana 200S and Montana 16. I-94 bypasses the north side of both communities to cross the Yellowstone River again.
The easternmost section of I-94 in Montana winds southeast from Glendive to Wibaux County. Straightening out somewhat, the freeway passes through northern reaches of the town of Wibaux, the last service center before the North Dakota state line. Open ranch land spreads to the east, as I-94 crosses into the Peace Garden State near Beach.
