Interstate 564 is a 2.77 mile long spur joining I-64 and U.S. 460 (Granby Street) at Wards Corner in Norfolk with Naval Station Norfolk (NSN) and SR 337 (Admiral Taussig Boulevard). I-564 also serves the Virginia Port Authority (VPA) and Norfolk International Terminal (NIT) with connections to SR 406 (International terminal Boulevard) and the I-564 Intermodal Connector.
Prior to the establishment of Interstate 564, SR 170 followed Admiral Taussig Boulevard east to SR 165 (Little Creek Road). SR 165/170 overlapped along Little Creek Road east to SR 194 (Chesapeake Boulevard) and Military Highway. SR 170 was subsequently truncated west of Military Highway at Lincoln Park.1
I-564 Intermodal Connector Project
Funded by Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Federal-aid funds, the I-564 Intermodal Connector Project is a limited access road extending west from Exit 1 to SR 337 (Hampton Boulevard), NSN Gate 5, NSN Truck Inspection NSN Gate 6 and the NIT North Gate. The project included reconfiguring the Commercial Vehicle Inspection Station for NSH and relocating NSN Gate 6, Patrol Road and Ingersol Road. A design-build contract for the project was awarded in February 2014, with construction commencing in August 2015. The NIT Port Access Lane opened on December 21, 2017.2 Ramps to NSN Gate 6 and SR 337 (Hampton Boulevard) were completed in 2018.3 Final work on the project wrapped up in Fall 2020.
