The 1996 Florida Legislature designated SR 112 as the Dewey Knight, Jr. Memorial Highway. Knight was a former Miami-Dade Assistant County Manager who oversaw a "blue-ribbon panel" that would help desegregate Miami-Dade County's federally-assisted housing programs. In addition, Knight developed ways to increase housing opportunities for residents of public housing who historically were afforded limited choices.
