Maine State Route 196 follows the Coastal Connector between Interstate 295, U.S. 201, SR 24 and U.S. 1. The connector joins Brunswick with Topsham across the Androscoggin River. Overall the state route runs 19.41 miles between U.S. 202 & SR 11-100 in Lewiston to U.S. 1 in Brunswick.

SR 196 East
Maine 196 (Coastal Connector) eastbound enters the intersection with the Maine 24 connector in eastern Topsham. Maine 196 follows a bypass route between U.S. 201 (Main Street) and the Androscoggin River outside of central Topsham. Maine 24 passes underneath the bypass at the Androscoggin River adjacent to a Maine Central Railroad line. 06/30/11
Maine 24 travels northeast from Downtown Topsham via Elm Street. The state route joins Brunswick and Topsham with Bowdoinham and Richmond northward along the Kennebec River. 06/28/05
Drivers bound for Maine 24 (Elm Street / Middlesex Road) turn off Maine 196 (Coastal Connector) for the short access road between the two routes. Maine 24 straddles the Androscoggin River below Maine 196 along Elm Street. Middlesex Road carries the state route to Bay Road on the 7.2 mile drive to Bowdoinham. 06/30/11
A high-level bridge carries Maine 196 over the Androscoggin River between Topsham and Brunswick. Maine 196 provides a direct connection between Interstate 295 and U.S. 1 for travelers bound for the Mid-Coast region. Merging onto the U.S. 1 southbound freeway from Maine 196 east. U.S. 1 travels along the south banks of the Androscoggin River to Mill Street in Brunswick. A modified diamond interchange joins U.S. 1 with U.S. 201 & Maine 24 (Maine Street) and Downtown Brunswick nearby. 06/28/05

Maine 196 consists of a four lane highway between U.S. 1 and the parclo interchange with Interstate 295 (Exit 31). Initially the Coastal Connector resembles an expressway with controlled access. 06/28/05
The pull through overhead reminds motorists of the Maine 196 connections with Maine 24 (Elm Street / Middlesex Road), U.S. 201 (Main Street) and Interstate 295. Maine 196 transitions into a commercial arterial from U.S. 201 to Interstate 295. 06/28/05
First in line for westbound motorists is the signalized intersection with the Maine 24 connector. Maine 24 travels below the Androscoggin River bridge by the north banks via Elm Street. The connector provides access to the state route on Middlesex Road. Maine 24 travels northeast from Downtown Brunswick and Topsham to Bowdoinham and Richmond. 06/28/05
