New York Route 440 follows the West Shore Expressway between the Outerbridge Crossing and the Clove Lakes / Staten Island Expressway (Interstate 278). The state route joins I-278 briefly before turning northward onto the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Expressway to the Bayonne Bridge into New Jersey. The 12.73 mile route continues west as New Jersey Route 440 to Perth Amboy and Edison township and north into Jersey City.
