New York Route 440 follows the West Shore Expressway between the Outerbridge Crossing and the Clove Lakes / Staten Island Expressway (Interstate 278). The state route joins I-278 briefly before turning northward onto the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Expressway to the Bayonne Bridge into New Jersey. The 12.73 mile route continues west as New Jersey Route 440 to Perth Amboy and Edison township and north into Jersey City.

New York Route 440 East - Outerbridge Crossing
New Jersey Route 440 rises above the Arthur Kill River on the Outerbridge Crossing. The four lane span connects Perth Amboy with NY 440 along the West Shore Expressway on Staten Island. 06/13/05

New York Route 440 North - West Shore Expressway
NY 440 follows the West Shore Expressway northward from the Outerbridge Crossing to Interstate 278 (Staten Island Expressway). I-278 joins Staten Island with Brooklyn across the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge. 06/13/05
Tyrellan Avenue passes over NY 440 ahead of the directional cloverleaf interchange joining the Korean War Veterans Parkway (formerly Richmond Parkway) with the West Shore Expressway. Korean War Veterans Parkway spurs northeast from NY 440 to Annadale, Greenridge and La Tourette Park. 06/13/05
A small guide sign referenced the renaming of Richmond Parkway to Korean War Veterans Parkway. The parkway ends at Richmond Avenue, five miles southwest of its intended end at I-278 (Staten Island Expressway), where an abandoned interchange stood until 2012. 06/13/05
A second sign advises motorists to remain on NY 440 north for the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge and Brooklyn. 06/13/05
NY 440 separates with Korean War Veterans Parkway for the West Shore Expressway north 7.5 miles to I-278 (Staten Island Expressway). 06/13/05
Continuing north, NY 440 (West Shore Expressway) runs between a pair of frontage roads (Veterans Road) to Exit 3 for Clay Pit Road. 06/13/05

Exit 3 departs NY 440 (West Shore Expressway) for adjacent Veterans Road north. Clay Pit Road connects the freeway with Bloomingdale Road north for Woodrow Road east to Woodrow and Huguenot. 06/13/05

Veterans Road resumes as the frontage road system for NY 440 (West Shore Expressway) at the Rossville neighborhood. An entrance ramp joins NY 440 one half mile ahead of the diamond interchange (Exit 4) with Arthur Kill Road. 06/13/05
Exit 4 leaves NY 440 (West Shore Expressway) north for Arthur Kill Road adjacent to Huguenot Avenue. Arthur Kill Road meanders across Staten Island from Tottenville northeast to Charleston, Rossville, Fresh Kills, Greenridge and La Tourette Park. Huguenot Avenue heads south to Huguenot and Princes Bay. 06/13/05
The West Shore Expressway curves northward to Fresh Kills and Victory Boulevard (Exit 7) at the Chelsea neighborhood of Staten Island. 06/13/05
NY 440 runs along the east side of Fresh Kills Landfill between Exits 4 and 7. 06/13/05
NY 440 advances a quarter mile north to the diamond interchange (Exit 7) with Victory Boulevard. Victory Boulevard angles northeast to Bulls Head and Willowbrook Park at the south end of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Expressway. 06/13/05
A slip ramp (Exit 7) leaves NY 440 north for E Service Road ahead of Victory Boulevard. Victory Boulevard spurs west to a dead end along the Arthur Kill River. William T. Davis Wildlife Refuge spreads to the east. 06/13/05
The succeeding exit from NY 440 (West Shore Expressway) north serves the Corporate Park of Staten Island. 06/13/05
The Glen Street entrance ramp joins NY 440 (West Shore Expressway) north ahead of the Meredith Avenue overpass. 06/13/05
Exit 8 joins NY 440 with South Avenue at the Chelsea neighborhood. South Avenue heads north from Meredith Avenue to Richmond Terrace at Newark Bay. 06/13/05
The diamond interchange (Exit 8) joining NY 440 with South Avenue falls between Chelsea Road and Travis Avenue. The West Shore Expressway extends another 1.5 miles to Interstate 278 (Staten Island Expressway). 06/13/05
Exit 9 connects the West Shore Expressway with Glen Street, a frontage street north from Edward Currey Avenue, 0.75 miles north of the South Avenue overpass. 06/13/05
Opened after three months of construction, the off-ramp at Exit 9 improved access to the Corporate Park of Staten Island. The $2 million project was completed by September 7, 2001.2 06/13/05

NY 440 north merges onto I-278 (Staten Island Expressway) east between the Graniteville and Bulls Head communities. The state route then follows Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Expressway north to the Bayonne Bridge. 06/13/05
