U.S. Highway 1

U.S. 1 provides the original route between Washington, D.C., Baltimore, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The federal highway was superseded in importance with the completion of Interstate 95 and the Northeastern Expressway. However outside of the urban areas, the US Highway still plays a vital role in movements throughout Cecil and Harford Counties.

  • 8,925 - Conowingo Dam
  • 11,025 - Between U.S. 222 and Maryland 273 (Rising Sun Road)
  • 4,125 - Between Maryland 273 (Rising Sun Road) and Maryland 276
  • 7,625 - Between Maryland 276 and the Pennsylvania state line

U.S. Highway 1 Alternate

U.S. 1 Alternate bypasses Arbutus between Halethorpe and Morrell Park in southwest Baltimore. The US highway utilizes Washington Boulevard and Caton Avenue along the 3.92-mile alignment.1 Interchanges exists along the route with Interstate 95 and Interstate 695 (Baltimore Beltway).

U.S. 1 Alternate North
U.S. 1 Alternate continues Washington Boulevard northward from U.S. 1 (Southwestern Boulevard) through Halethorpe. The first northbound reassurance marker lies at the partial "Y" interchange with Southwestern Boulevard. U.S. 1 northbound traffic passes underneath Washington Boulevard en route to Arbutus. Situated within the Baltimore suburb of Halethorpe is the signalized intersection with Ridge and Northeast Avenues. Ridge Avenue continues east from Francis Avenue in Arbutus to Washington Boulevard. Northeast Avenue ties into U.S. 1 Alternate from residential areas to the south. Photo taken 10/10/04.

Northbound at Sulphur Spring Road and Old Washington Boulevard. Sulphur Spring Road comprises a surface arterial west to Arbutus and junction U.S. 1 (Southwestern Boulevard). Old Washington Boulevard loops east of U.S. 1 Alternate between Monumental Avenue and here. Traffic to Interstate 695 east (outer loop) departs U.S. 1 Alternate (Washington Boulevard) northbound at Exit 10. The Baltimore Beltway travels southeast to Ferndale and the Francis Scott Key Bridge before turning northeast to Dundalk, Essex, and Overlea. Photo taken 10/10/04.

U.S. 1 Alternate South
U.S. 1 Alternate follows Caton Avenue south from its beginning at the intersection of Caton and Wilkens Avenues in south Baltimore. From there the federal highway quickly encounters the Exit 50 three-quarter cloverleaf interchange with Interstate 95. A loop ramp carries U.S. 1 Alternate southbound drivers onto Interstate 95 northbound for Downtown Baltimore and the John F. Kennedy Memorial Highway to Wilmington, Delaware. Photo taken 10/10/04.

U.S. 1 splits with Caton Avneue via Hammonds Ferry Road briefly ahead of its turn onto Washington Boulevard. Hammonds Ferry Road exits the city en route to Lansdowne and Patapsco Valley State Park as U.S. 1 Alternate turns southwest via Washington Boulevard to Halethorpe and the return to U.S. 1. Caton Avenue transitions into Patapsco Avenue beyond the U.S. 1 Alternate split via Hammonds Ferry Road. Patapso Avenue intersects Washington Boulevard adjacent to the U.S. 1 Alternate southerly turn adjacent to the Baltimore County line. Fulton Avenue doubles as U.S. 1 northbound from Wilkens Avenue to North Avenue in west central Baltimore. Fulton Avenue flows northbound through to Edmondson Avenue, where it switches to two way traffic separated by a grassy median. Traffic turning left (west) onto Edmondson Avenue from Fulton Avenue south meets the southbound direction of U.S. 1 (Monroe Street) one block to the west of U.S. 1 north. U.S. 1 proceeds another block south to meet the U.S. 40 freeway at Franklin / Mulberry Streets. Edmondson Avenue becomes a part of U.S. 40, 11 blocks to the west. Photo taken 06/20/12.
