U.S. 46 is an intrastate route through New Jersey. The highway parallels Interstate 80 from Knowlton township, near Delaware Water Gap, to the George Washington Bridge alongside I-95/U.S. 1-9. The 75 mile long highway was established in 1936, running west to U.S. 611 in Portland, Pennsylvania. In 1953, the route was shortened slightly with the realignment of U.S. 611 into Columbia, NJ.1

U.S. 46 East
An intricate series of ramps joins U.S. 46, Route 94, I-80 at Exit 4, the Columbia Portland Bridge and Decatur Street in Columbia. Beginning here, U.S. 46 travels southeast along the Delaware River from I-80 to Ramseyburg and Buttzville. A trumpet interchange ties U.S. 46 in with the tolled Columbia Portland Bridge just to the south. 07/28/00
Since replaced, a remaining U.S. 611 shield for PA 611 (former U.S. 611) appeared at the ramp linking U.S. 46 eastbound to the Columbia Portland Bridge across the Delaware River. A local ramp combines with the U.S. 46 ramp from Decatur Street ahead of the bridge to Portland, Pennsylvania. 07/28/00
U.S. 46 historically crossed the Delaware River and ended at U.S. 611 in Portland, Pennsylvania. The toll bridge is part of unsigned Route 94.
U.S. 611 was realigned away from Columbia, New Jersey in 1969 and downgraded to PA 611 in 1972.1 06/11/96
The ramp linking the Columbia Portland Bridge with U.S. 46 eastbound includes a turn off for Washington Street west into Columbia. U.S. 46 extends east along a rural two lane highway. 07/28/00
U.S. 46 West
U.S. 46 west converges with Route 23 and I-80 west of Totowa at a complex directional interchange. U.S. 46 partitions into ramps for the mainline west to Willowbrook Mall and Fairfield Township, Route 23 south to Cedar Grove Township and Route 23 north to I-80 west and Wayne Township.
This set of signs was replaced with a new sign bridge and diagrammatic overhead by 2007. 08/11/04
A second set of button copy overheads, since replaced, posted at the separation U.S. 46 into ramps for Route 23 and I-80 west. Route 23 combines with U.S. 202 two miles to the north at Wayne while I-80 heads west ten miles to meet I-287. Route 23 south reaches Verona in five miles. 08/11/04
U.S. 46 west enters the community of Columbia ahead of the trumpet interchange with the Columbia Portland Bridge across the Delaware River. A short expressway section links U.S. 46 with Interstate 80 and Route 94. 07/28/00
