U.S. 158 east
Eastbound reassurance shield posted along U.S. 158 after the intersection with Indiantown Road. Indiantown Road travels south from North carolina 34 (Shawboro Road) at Shawboro to Indiantown in Camden County. Photo taken 12/31/69.
U.S. 158 (Croatan Highway) curves southward at the split with Virginia Dare Trail opposite the Outer Banks Welcome Center. Virginia Dare Trail carries North Carolina 12 shields south from Ocean Boulevard through to Whalebone Junction. The alignment represents the original U.S. 158 path along the Outer Banks.
North Carolina 12 travels northward from Southern Shores six miles to Duck and 20 miles to its end at Corolla. U.S. 158 meanwhile continues along Croatian Highway, a five-lane commercial type arterial, through to junction U.S. 64. Photo taken 02/15/01.
U.S. 158 draws to a close at Whalebone Junction with U.S. 64 west and North Carolina 12 (Virginia Dare Trail). The sign bridge pictured here displays the original configuration where U.S. 264 overlapped with U.S. 64 east from Manns Harbor to U.S. 158. When the Virginia Dare Bridge across Croatan Sound opened in 2002, U.S. 264 was shortened to its junction with U.S. 64 at Manns Harbor. Photo taken 12/26/00.
U.S. 158 west
U.S. 158 westbound near Milepost 12 and Jockeys Ridge State Park. The naturally occurring sand dunes associated with the park are visible along the west side of Croatan Highway. This park was established to protect the dunes from development. Photo taken 12/16/01.
Northbound on the Croatan Highway near Milepost 10. Several traffic lights and heavy development are found along the 16 mile route of U.S. 158 in Dare County. Lightly traveled during the winter months, U.S. 158 becomes increasingly congested throughout the tourist season. Photo taken 12/16/01.
Typical reassurance shield and speed limit combination sign assembly posted along U.S. 158 along the Outer Banks. This particular assembly resides north of the intersection with Eckner Street. Photo taken 08/24/09.
U.S. 158 (Croatan Highway) turns westward at the merge with Virginia Dare Trail. Virginia Dare Trail splits with North Carolina 12 as the state highway leads north along Ocean Boulevard to Southern Shores. North Carolina 12 continues another 20 miles to Corolla while U.S. 158 continues two miles to the Wright Brothers Memorial Bridge and Currituck County. Photo taken 08/24/09.

U.S. 158 exits Dare County and the Outer Banks across the Wright Brothers Memorial Bridge spanning Currituck Sound. The bridge consists of two concrete spans joining the Martin's Point and Point Harbor areas. Westbound U.S. 158 travels along a bridge built in 1995. Eastbound travelers are relegated to the shoulder less 1966 bridge. Photo taken 08/24/09.
Approaching Macedonia Church Road (North Carolina 136) on U.S. 158 (Caratoke Highway) west. North Carolina 136 follows Macedonia Church Road east to Poplar Branch Road and the community of Poplar Branch. The state highway replaced North Carolina 3 on March 3, 2003 when NCDOT switched its designation with North Carolina 136 at Kannapolis. Photo taken 12/17/01.
U.S. 158 splits with the Caratoke Highway at Barco and junction North Carolina 168. The US route turns west onto two-lane Shortcut Road to Gregory, Belcross, Camden and Elizabeth City. Photo taken 08/24/09.
U.S. 158 (Caratoke Highway) expands to four lanes ahead of the traffic light with Shortcut Road. North Carolina 168 continues the Caratoke Highway north to Maple, Currituck and Sligo en route to Chesapeake, Virginia. Photo taken 08/24/09.
