U.S. 401 enters North Carolina from McColl, South Carolina. Passing through Laurinburg, the highway advances north to Raeford, Fayetteville, Lillington, Raleigh, Louisburg and Warrenton. The 174 mile course within the Tar Heel State concludes at Interstate 85 near Wise and the Virginia state line.

U.S. 401 North Carolina Guides

Prior to 1996, U.S. 401 was routed onto the Raleigh belt line. It was subsequently restored along city streets through the capital city. This includes two sections of one-way couplet, one along Capital Boulevard, and another between McDowell and Dawson Streets.

Business routes for U.S. 401 are designated in Laurinburg, Fayetteville and Rolesville. The bannered route in Laurinburg overlaps with portions of U.S. 15-501 Business along a 4.31 mile course on Main Street and Wagram Road. U.S. 401 Business in Fayetteville runs along a combination of urban boulevards and Martin Luther King, Jr. Freeway for 9.66 miles. The Rolesville loop follows Main Street for 4.24 miles.

The first shield for U.S. 401 south stands just beyond the diamond interchange joining U.S. 1 with I-85 in north Warren County. U.S. 1/401 continue three miles to Wise and six miles to split at Norlina. 06/01/12
U.S. 401 travels 11 miles south to Warrenton where it meets U.S. 158 Business and 34 miles to Louisburg. 06/01/12
