Exit 40B leaves I-83 north for New Cumberland ahead of the York Split interchange with PA 581 (Harrisburg Expressway) west to Camp Hill. Construction from June 2013 through 2015 expanded I-83 northbound to three lanes from Exit 40B to Exit 41A, and two lanes at the trumpet interchange with PA 581. 06/21/12
The Naval Support Activity complex in Hampden township lies south of the exchange joining U.S. 11 (Carlisle Pike) with PA 581. 06/21/12

This 1952-built bridge carrying Lowther Avenue was replaced by May 2013 to accommodate a widened freeway below and new off-ramps to Lowther Street from both I-83 north and PA 581 east. Beyond the overpass I-83 turns eastward along the Harrisburg Expressway. Exit 41A loops onto PA 581, which was completed as a freeway in 1996 between I-83 and I-81. 06/21/12

Union Deposit Road constitutes a divided four lane arterial between Penbrook and Interstate 83. East of Exit 48, Union Deposit Road leads to Twin Lakes and Hoernerstown in South Hanover township. 06/21/12
The Capital Beltway was established in the late 1990s to give a single designation to the loop created by I-81, I-83 and PA 581. 09/18/04
