PA 28 follows the Allegheny River northeast from Pittsburgh's North Shore along a freeway to I-76 at Exit 48 and U.S. 422 on the Kittanning bypass.

Exit 48 connects the Pennsylvania Turnpike with Freeport Road (SR 1001) in Harmar township. Freeport Road leads west to PA 901 (Indianola Road) north to link with PA 28 along the Allegheny Valley Expressway.

The New Stanton Interchange (Exit 75) joins the PA Turnpike with Interstate 70 west and SR 3091 (New Stanton Youngwood Road) with both U.S. 119 and PA Turnpike 66 (Amos Hutchinson Bypass).

U.S. 119 leads south from the borough of New Stanton along a freeway to Mount Pleasant en route to Connellsville. PA 66 follows a limited access toll road north to PA 66 Business south of Delmont.

A service plaza was formerly located along I-76 eastbound just ahead of the Center Avenue (SR 3111) overpass and this shield assembly. Interstate 70 ventures west from the PA Turnpike to Washington, Wheeling, West Virginia and Columbus, Ohio.

U.S. 119 is freeway or expressway grade from I-76 south toward Unionville, where it links to the Mon-Fay Expressway (PA Turnpike 43) corridor. Greensburg lies to the northeast of Youngwood on U.S. 119 and east of PA 66 along U.S. 30.
