The Katy Freeway was built as a minimalist facility in 1958-61 as cheaply as possible, with six lanes and no room for expansion. Unfortunately, growth overwhelmed the freeway, pushing it to it’s maximum carrying capacity. In this photo, the westbound lanes are transitioning to the new concrete laid in the reconstruction project. Photo taken December 24, 2005.

The IH-10/Beltway 8 interchange is also being reconstructed, but while the old interchange is in use, exits to/from Beltway 8 are left hand exits from IH-10 westbound. This is due to the widening of IH-10 and the narrow design of the original stack. Photo taken December 24, 2005.
