Interstate 610 - The Loop

Interstate Loop 610 forms the inner loop of Houston. The loop was originally designated as Loop 137, which was absorbed into Loop 610.

Plans for Loop 610 date back to 1931, but construction did not begin in earnest until after World War II on the north side of the city. With the advent of the Interstate Highway System, Loop 137 was extended around the west and south sides of the city, but not the east side. Loop 137 was extended in 1955 along this alignment.

In 1960, the missing link of Loop 137 between IH-10 and SH 225 on the east side of the city was added to the state highway system. At the same time, the north, west, and south loops (between IH-10 on the east side and IH-45 on the southeast side) were designated as Interstate 610.

Interstate 610 was extended around the east side of Houston in 1962, completing the loop. The first section completed was between IH-45 and Hardy Street in 1960, followed by the upgrade of Loop 137 along the northeast side in 1964 between Kelley Street and IH-10.

Completion dates:

  • North Loop: 1975
  • West Loop: 1968
  • South Loop: 1975
  • East Loop: 1975

Interstate 610 has been progressively reconstructed, with the most recent reconstruction project occurring on the heavily trafficked West Loop. The West Loop reconstruction project is scheduled for completion in 2007, in tandem with reconstruction of the IH-10/IH-610 west interchange.
