Interstate 80 Business Loops

Each of the business routes along Interstate 80 in Nevada are former alignments of U.S. 40. Many of these business routes are also state highways, but not all of them are fully state maintained.

Business Loop I-80 - Winnemucca

Business Loop I-80 and Nevada 289/Winnemucca Boulevard east
Business Loop I-80 and Nevada 289 depart Interstate 80 (Exit 173) west of Winnemucca. The tandem follow Winnemucca Boulevard from there alongside the freeway closely through to Exit 176. Winnemucca Boulevard represents the old alignment of U.S. 40 from Rose Creek Road eastward into downtown. Business Loop I-80 and Nevada 289/Winnemucca Boulevard west
Business Loop I-80 and Nevada 289 proceed west into downtown Winnemucca. An overhead sign directs motorists toward U.S. 95 (Melarky Street) north and Winnemucca Boulevard (U.S. 95 south) in downtown Winnemucca. The intersection represents the east end of the Winnemucca-to-the-Sea highway. That auto trail links Winnemucca with Crescent City, California via U.S. 95, Nevada 140, Oregon 140, Oregon 62, original U.S. 99, and U.S. 199. U.S. 95 otherwise provides the most direct route from Winnemucca northward to and Boise, Idaho and Lakeview, Oregon (via Nevada 140 west). Photo taken 09/09/05.
Business Loop I-80 and Nevada 289/Winnemucca Boulevard west and U.S. 95 south
U.S. 95 southbound joins Business Loop I-80 and Nevada 289 west along Winnemucca Boulevard from downtown Winnemucca to Exit 176 of Interstate 80. After merging onto the freeway at Exit 176, the federal highway will join Interstate 80 west from Winnemucca past Lovelock all the way to Fernley for a distance of 93 miles. Photo taken 09/09/05.
Business Loop I-80 and Nevada 289/Winnemucca Boulevard west
Business Loop I-80 and Nevada 289 continue west of their split with U.S. 95 at Exit 176 another three miles alongside Interstate 80 to Exit 173. Still named Winnemucca Boulevard, the two-lane road follows old U.S. 40 to the intersection with Rose Creek Road. Rose Creek Road follows the eastbound side of Interstate 80 from near Exit 173 west to Airport Road. Rose Creek Road and Airport Road constitute the Airport Loop to Winnemucca Municipal Airport. Westbound Business Loop I-80 and Nevada 289 (Former U.S. 40) approach Exit 173, where the business route is abosorbed onto Interstate 80 west and U.S. 95 south. Take the freeway southwest to Lovelock, Fernley, and Reno. A 66-mile drive lies ahead for westbound travelers between here and Lovelock, which is the next major town from here. Photo taken 09/09/05.

Business Loop I-80 - Elko

Soon thereafter, eastbound Business Loop I-80 meets Nevada 227/Fifth Street at this intersection in downtown Elko. Nevada 227 travels seven miles south to meet Nevada 228 in Spring Creek and then continues 19 miles to scenic Lamoille Canyon. Nevada 227 ends at the Idaho Street intersection with 5th Street in downtown Elko. Continuing west along Business Loop I-80 and Nevada 535 (Idaho Street), the next major intersection after leaving downtown Elko is with Nevada 225/Mountain City Highway. Nevada 225 begins at the forthcoming intersection and travels north to Exit 301 of Interstate 80, and then it proceeds north past Wild Horse Reservoir to Mountain City (84 miles north, with minimal services available there). Nevada 225 then proceeds north to Owyhee and then proceeds into the state of Idaho, where it becomes Idaho 51, which continues north and eventually meets with Interstate 84 and U.S. 20-26-30 in Mountain Home. An END Nevada 225 shield assembly is posted along Nevada 225/Mountain City Highway south as it approaches the intersection with Idaho Street east/west and Silver Street south. Business Loop I-80 and Nevada 535 travel 0.75 miles east to the north end of Nevada 227 (Fifth Street and Lamoille Highway). To the west, the business route eventually reconnects with Interstate 80 west en route to Carlin and Battle Mountain. For those continuing straight ahead, Silver Street continues south across the Union Pacific Railroad line before turning east toward Third and Fifth Streets. The business loop in Wells extends from Exit 351 to Exit 352 via Humboldt Avenue and Sixth Avenue, the latter of which is also part of Old U.S. 40.
