Nevada 375/Extraterrestrial Highway

Routing

Nevada 375 is an east-west state highway that travels 98.41 miles in remote Lincoln County and is known as the Extraterrestrial Highway (officially designated as such in 1996). The state highway begins on U.S. 6 in Warm Springs and extends southeast to meet Nevada 318 near Crystal Springs. The route passes near the northern edge of Nellis Air Force Range and also near Area 51.

Highway Guide

The pictures that appear on this page and the next three pages relate to Oscar Voss's visit to Nevada 375 (the Extraterrestrial Highway) in September of 1998. The "Extraterrestrial Highway" designation came in 1996 as part of a tourism campaign to hype the highway's connection to UFO sightings and proximity to the top-secret "Area 51."

This road is another strong candidate for "loneliest road." The area is very unpopulated, contributing to the low average daily vehicle count. In addition, the road is also "lonely" from the standpoint of service availability -- you can get gas in Rachel (a tiny town "of 90 souls" about midway on the Extraterrestrial Highway -- best known for the Little A'Le'Inn), but once you pass it going northbound it's 110 miles to the nearest gas station in Tonopah along U.S. 6.

Despite the Associated Press photographs that show the governor of Nevada proudly holding up a "Speed Limit Warp 7" sign, there no such signs displayed along the highway. According to Oscar, "the locals say that sign went up the day the road was renamed in 1996, but was taken down by the next day. The actual -- though lightly enforced -- speed limit is 70 mph."

Scenes Pertaining to Nevada 375
Nevada 375/Extraterrestrial Highway passes through the small community of Rachel (elevation 4,970 feet above sea level, population 98 per the webpage as of July 2012). This unincorpoated community is located in remote Lincoln County near Area 51. Variations of these two signs appear at both ends of Nevada 375 (at U.S. 93 and at U.S. 6) and also near Rachel. These scenes of Rachel are located near Area 51 along Nevada 375. Photos taken 9/98 by Oscar Voss.

This series of pictures show the kitschy "Little'Ale'Inn" in Rachel. Food and lodging are available here for travelers along remote Nevada 375. Photos taken 9/98 by Oscar Voss.
This unusual "black box" is located along the perimeter for Area 51. Local theories abound about what this box is used for. Photo taken 9/98 by Oscar Voss.
