Nevada 375

Routing
The pictures that appear on this page and the next three pages relate to Oscar Voss's visit to Nevada 375 (the Extraterrestrial Highway) in September of 1998. The "Extraterrestrial Highway" designation came in 1996 as part of a tourism campaign to hype the highway's connection to UFO sightings and proximity to the top-secret "Area 51."
This road is another strong candidate for "loneliest road." The area is very unpopulated, contributing to the low average daily vehicle count. In addition, the road is also "lonely" from the standpoint of service availability -- you can get gas in Rachel (a tiny town "of 90 souls" about midway on the Extraterrestrial Highway -- best known for the Little A'Le'Inn), but once you pass it going northbound it's 110 miles to the nearest gas station in Tonopah along U.S. 6.
Despite the Associated Press photographs that show the governor of Nevada proudly holding up a "Speed Limit Warp 7" sign, there no such signs displayed along the highway. According to Oscar, "the locals say that sign went up the day the road was renamed in 1996, but was taken down by the next day. The actual -- though lightly enforced -- speed limit is 70 mph."
