Iowa 99 was a 33.3 mile long loop from U.S. 34 in Burlington to U.S. 61 in Wapello. Decommissioned on July 1, 2003, Iowa 99 was redesignated as County Road 99 through both Des Moines and Louisa Counties. Fitting within the state wide grid, the designation changed in 2005 to County Road X99.1

Running along the Mississippi River bluff line, County Road X99 north from U.S. 34/Iowa 163 in Burlington to Oakville is part of the Great River Road National Scenic Byway. The Iowa Great River Road separates with CR X99 north of Toolesboro along Louisa County Road X61 to Muscatine.
