Northbound U.S. 97 meets Historic U.S. 30 in Biggs Junction. All motorist services (gas, food, lodging) are available here. Just north of here, U.S. 97 will interchange with Interstate 84 and U.S. 30, which closely parallel the massive Columbia River. 08/03/11
Leaving Biggs Junction, U.S. 97 north next approaches Interstate 84 and U.S. 30. This major east-west freeway stays along the south bank of the Columbia River between Portland and Boardman. 08/03/11
Upon reaching the interchange, turn right for Interstate 84 and U.S. 30 east to Hermiston, Pendleton, and Boise. 08/03/11
The next left connects to Interstate 84 and U.S. 30 west to The Dalles and Portland. Use Interstate 84 west for the Columbia River Highway, which includes some amazing scenery including spectacular Multnomah Falls. 08/03/11
Leaving the Interstate 84 interchange, U.S. 97 immediately prepares to cross the Columbia River en route to Yakima. 08/03/11
The two lane highway crosses the Columbia River via the Biggs Rapids (Sam Hill Memorial) Bridge, which opened on November 1, 1962, as a toll bridge. Tolls were removed in 1975. This bridge is approximately 26 feet in width. The bridge is approximately 2,567 feet long, which is a little less than a half mile in length. Vertical clearance is 75 feet above the mean river level.1 The Oregon-Washington state line is located near the south edge of the superstructure of this steel truss bridge; the bridge is maintained in its entirety by the Washington Department of Transportation. 08/03/11
