The Gandy Bridge consists of two girder bridges. The crossing was the first to link Tampa and St. Petersburg when it opened in 1924 as a toll bridge. 03/31/21
The original Gandy Bridge was replaced in 1956, with a second span added in 1976 to accommodate increasing traffic demands. Deterioration of the 1956-bridge led to the construction of a third span for westbound between 1994 and December 1996. 03/31/21
The 1956 span for the Gandy Bridge was slated for demolition after the new westbound bridge opened in 1996. It was repurposed as the Friendship Trail, a fishing pier and multi use path. Continued deterioration and increasing maintenance costs for the bridge however led to its permanent closure in 2008. 12/23/15
The Howard Frankland Bridge runs along the northern horizon, carrying Interstate 275 between St. Petersburg and Westshore in Tampa. 06/27/20
Advancing from the apex of the 1996-built westbound Gandy Bridge. Demolished in 2015/16, the former Friendship Trail bridge paralleled the north side of U.S. 92 here. 03/31/21
