Interstate 290 was completed west from the New York Thruway to NY 263 at Amherst in 1964.

Interstate 290 is a suburban freeway looping 11.00 miles northwest from I-90 (New York Thruway) outside the village of Williamsville to I-190 near the South Grand Island Bridge. Also known as the Youngmann Expressway, I-290 connects Buffalo with the Town of Tonawanda, the city of Tonawanda, the town of Amherst and the University at Buffalo (UB).
