Interstate 15 - Utah

Interstate 15 Utah

This pair of Interstate 15 route markers is posted on Business Loop I-15 and Utah 99 northbound in Fillmore in central Utah. Virtually every route marker shield in the state of Utah omits the state name (is "neutered"). Photo taken 08/20/11.

Routing

Interstate 15 is the most important north-south corridor in Utah, passing through the heart of the Beehive State. Originating at the north end of the Virgin River Gorge, Interstate 15 immediately enters St. George, then proceeds north to Cedar City, Beaver, Cove Fort, Nephi, Santaquin, Spanish Fork, Provo, Orem, Sandy City, Salt Lake City, Ogden, Brigham City, and Tremonton. The freeway serves the great Salt Lake City metropolitan area by connecting the capital city with Provo to the south and Ogden to the north. The freeway stays along the western reaches of the Wasatch Mountain Range from southwest Utah through to Great Salt Lake.

History

Between St. George and Spanish Fork, Interstate 15 largely replaced U.S. 91. Segments of the historic highway are still in use as business routes and state highways. Between Spanish Fork and Brigham City, Interstate 15 parallels U.S. 89 and Old U.S. 91, with several segments of U.S. 89 still in use. North of Brigham City, Interstate 15 replaced Historic U.S. 191. Once Interstate 15 replaced U.S. 191, that designation was available to be relocated elsewhere (and in 1981, it was relocated into western Wyoming and eastern Utah).

Highway Guides

These highway guides cover Interstate 15 within the state of Utah.

Scenes Pertaining to Interstate 15
These Interstate 15 and Interstate 70 shields are found on the exit from the Cove Fort Rest Stop to Utah 161. Turn left on Utah 161 (Old U.S. 91) north to Interstate 15 north or turn right on Utah 161 (Old U.S. 91) south to Interstate 70 east or Interstate 15 south. Photo taken 04/30/11 by Karl Forth.
Interstate 15 shields posted at the west end of the Exit 129 diamond interchange at Sulphurdale. The shields direct motorists onto the freeway from local ranch roads. Photo taken 10/18/04.
A sign replacement project was underway at Exit 129 at the time of this photograph. Utah, like the state of Wyoming, places wooden shields and signs along their roadways. The new shield featuring a wide series "EM" Highway Gothic font replaced the one with series "C" highway gothic font. The signs face westward above Interstate 15. Photo taken 10/18/04.
Andy Field flipped the old sign upright to display the differences between the old sign and new sign posted at the Interstate 15 northbound on-ramp at Sulphurdale. Manderfield Road enters the scene from the right. Old U.S. 91 turns northeast toward Cove Fort to the left. Photo taken 10/18/04.
This Interstate 15 northbound onramp sign is posted on Layton Parkway, with the Wasatch Front visible in the background. Photo taken 01/21/11 by Garrett Smith.

The city of Fillmore was established as Utah's first capital while it was a territory prior to statehood (from 1851 to 1856); the city was founded and surveyed on October 28, 1851. After the capital moved to Salt Lake City in 1856, it still took several decades before Utah became a state (in 1896). Fillmore had a population of 2,253 as of the 2000 Census; this region is sparsely populated, but some believe that increasingly populated areas to the north (Provo-Salt Lake City-Ogden) and the south (Cedar City-St. George) will eventually push toward each other, catching Fillmore near the middle. For now, Fillmore is a quiet outpost along busy Interstate 15. Photo taken 08/20/11.
The aforementioned Utah 99 route marker is posted after the Fillmore city limits sign. Photo taken 08/20/11.
