Today (yes, literally, these photos were taken this morning) we go up to the top of Sierra Grande, the mountain that I’ve had in the background of many photos. There is in fact a road that goes up there. Is it a good road? No, no it is not.

One of the better sections of the road from highway 64/87 up to the top of the mountain.

Just to get things started off correctly, first we get eaten by cows.

The communications towers at the top of Sierra Grande. I didn’t take any pictures on the way up because we were going south and therefore into the sun.

Pikes Peak, about 150 miles away. Dale says this is the clearest day he’s ever had up on top of Sierra Grande.

The Sangre del Cristo mountains, a far more reasonable 75 miles to the west.

We start back down the hill. Well, there’s Capulin Volcano – and somewhere in the foreground there is a road. Really.

There we are, much better. Only 30% downhill grade.

Almost down. The entire road is about four miles long, and takes an hour to drive.

A large herd of antelope. By exact count: 27 antelope. And two impostors on the right.

We end our day by getting eaten by cows again. Probably the same cows. The red one, with the white face – he looks familiar.

(As with the previous time, the total number of puffins seen on this trip is zero.)
