
Interstate 220 is a 12.1 mile long freeway bypass around the west side of Jackson. Overlapping with U.S. 49 north from I-20, I-220 connects with the US highway leading northwest to Yazoo City. The northern extent ties into Interstate 55 just across the Madison County line in the suburb of Ridgeland.

The contract for construction of Interstate 220 north from U.S. 49 to I-55 was awarded on September 25, 1973. Costing $9.96 million, work on the 5.49 mile section ran through March 1, 1976.1
