Hardy Toll Road

Entering the Hardy Toll Road, the first exit is for Crosstimbers Road. This is the only free exit on the Hardy Toll Road. Photo taken 9/20/05.
The short section of the Hardy Toll Road between Loop 610 and Crosstimbers Road is known as Spur 548 by TxDOT (unsigned), hence the free status. Photo taken 9/20/05.
Passing Crosstimbers Road, The Hardy Toll Road begins. The first exit serves Tidwell and Parker Roads. Photo taken 9/20/05.
The northbound lanes cross the railroad tracks, and travel on the east side of the tracks while the southbound lanes are on the west side in this section of the toll road. Photo taken 9/20/05.
Tidwell and Parker Roads exit here. Photo taken 9/20/05.
With the railroad in the median, overpasses of the Hardy Toll Road are unusually high in this section. Photo taken 9/20/05.
The next exit serves Little York and Gulf Bank roads. Heading south of the main toll plaza, each subsequent exit along the Hardy Toll Road is tolled. Photo taken 9/20/05.
The next exit serves Aldine Mail Route and Aldine Bender Road. As this is not a TxDOT road, notice how FM 525 is not signed for Aldine Bender Road. Photo taken 9/20/05.
Aldine Mail Route and Aldine Bender Road exit here. This is the last exit before the first toll plaza. Photo taken 9/20/05.
Mounted on the Aldine Mail Route bridge is the first advisory about the toll plaza. Photo taken 9/20/05.
North of the Toll Plaza, travelers find the first sign for Beltway 8. Also noted on this button copy sign is the former signge for Greens Road. Photo taken 9/20/05.
Approaching the toll plaza, the southbound lanes cross the railroad tracks (not seen in the picture) As Beltway 8 is free ahead, the road is signed "Sam Houston Parkway". Photo taken 9/20/05.
EZ Tag users (electronic toll tag) use the left two lanes, while all other users use the right lane as on the approach to the south toll plaza. Photo taken 9/20/05.
This toll plaza has seven lanes - two EZ Tag only lanes, three coin lanes, and two full service lanes. The toll is $1.25 if paid by cash, or $1.00 if paid by EZ Tag. Photo taken 9/20/05.
North of the Toll Plaza, the right two lanes immediately exit to Beltway 8. The Beltway 8 interchange is a four-level interchange, with frontage road access between all directions and two fly-over ramps. Notice the age difference between the two signs. Photo taken 9/20/05.
Passing under Beltway 8, the next two exits serve Intercontinental Airport and Rankin Road. The flyover ramp from Beltway 8 East to the Hardy Toll Road north can be seen in the background. Photo taken 9/20/05.
Both Rankin Road and the Intercontinental Airport connector require toll payment. We have entered a new toll zone north of Beltway 8. Photo taken 9/20/05.
The Intercontinental Airport connector opened in 2000, and runs between this point and JFK Boulevard just inside the boundary of IAH. There is a $1.00 toll for the airport connector, which also serves Greens Road. Photo taken 9/20/05.
Rankin Road exits here. Many of the signs on the Hardy Toll Road are still the 1987-vintage button copy, some of the few remaining button copy signs in Texas. Photo taken 9/20/05.

Looking north of Rankin Road, motorists see the banked curves and parkway-like feel of the freeway, with no frontage roads. This is unusual for any Texas freeway and makes the Hardy Toll Road less visually assulting. Photos taken 9/20/05.
The next exit is Richey Road. Photo taken 9/20/05.
Following Richey Road, the next exit is FM 1960. Photo taken 9/20/05.
FM 1960 is a major arterial street through North Houston, beginning at US 290 and SH 6, travelling east to US 90. The road is six lanes between SH 249 and Humble, and four lanes between Humble and Huffmann. Photo taken 9/20/05.
FM 1960 exits here. Notice that there are no state markers for FM 1960 on the guide sign, and the small added sign for Splashtown USA. Splashtown is a water park operated by Six Flags, and is located off IH 45 north of Louetta Road. Photo taken 9/20/05.
The north section of the Hardy Toll Road is two lanes northbound, and three lanes southbound. We are approaching the north Toll Plaza at this point. Photo taken 9/20/05.
This unusual sign font is used for a distance sign to East Louetta Road and Aldine-Westfield Road. Photo taken 9/20/05.
Here drivers approach the north Toll Plaza. There are six lanes here - two EZ Tag only, two coin lanes and two full service lanes. The toll is $1.25, or $1.00 with an EZ Tag. Photo taken 9/20/05.
Looking just north of the toll plaza, the road briefly takes on an auxiliary lane. Photo taken 9/20/05.
The right lane exits for Aldine Westfield and East Louetta Road. For those who need to get to IH 45 or to access Spring Cypress Road, this is the fastest way to do so. Photo taken 9/20/05.
The next exit serves Riley Fuzzell Road. Use Riley Fuzzell to reach Old Town Spring. Photo taken 9/20/05.
The final exit on the Hardy Toll Road is Northgate Crossing, which serves the Northgate Crossing community. After this point, the Hardy Toll Road merges with IH 45, just south of the Harris County line. Photo taken 9/20/05.
