U.S. 90 East - Rodriguez Freeway

U.S. Highway 90 east
This view looks east at the first exit inside the 410 loop, along the US 90 freeway. This exit is the primary freeway access point for the large Lackland AFB on the west side of San Antonio. This also marks the end of Loop 13, the city's original loop. The loop road runs east along the south side of San Antonio and then north along the east side of the city. Originally a full loop, the northern portion was transformed into a freeway that eventually became part of IH 410. Photo taken 08/31/08.
East of the Loop 13 exit, motorists see this "pull through" sign, with a control point and the route number. The skyline of San Antonio can be seen on the hazy horizon. This section of roadway was opened in 1968 and named for Cielo Rodriguez, the first hispanic medal of honor recipient. Photo taken 08/31/08.

Part of the baseball stadium can be seen on the left here, as motorists see this VMS assembly. When this photo was taken, the VMS was displaying information for evacuees of Hurricane Gustav, which was hitting the gulf coast of Louisiana at the time. Photo taken 08/31/08.
Callaghan Road runs north and northeast from here, and also has an exit along IH 410. The exit sign is in the older Highway Gothic font, while the sign on the left displays the newer Clearview font that TxDot has adopted. The likely reason for the two fonts on display here is that Port San Antonio is the new name for the former Kelly Air Force Base, which was closed in 1995 and renamed in 2007. Photo taken 08/31/08.
The SH 151 freeway comes in here, east of Callaghan Road. The interchange here opened in 1987, when the SH 151 freeway was built westward. Currently the only direct connection with US 90 comes for westbound traffic, while eastbound traffic must exit and turn around. Photo taken 08/31/08.
This sign tells motorists that they must exit to get on SH 151. Both freeways serve the same general area, so there would be very little traffic flow headed from eastbound US 90 to westbound SH 151. Photo taken 08/31/08.

This view looks east at the 36th Street exit. Port San Antonio is on the right here, and employs over 17,000 people. Companies such as Boeing, Lockheed Martin, and Pratt & Whitney have facilities there. Currently the Port area is undergoing renovation and will eventually contain residences, retail, and office space. Photo taken 08/31/08.
SH 151 traffic and Port traffic merging here mean the freeway briefly has 5 eastbound lanes. The VMS here employs an intelligent traffic system to tell drivers the approximate travel time to upcoming freeways. The next interchange comes at General McMullen Drive. There are no exit numbers along the US 90 freeway. The interchange here is a cloverleaf, with a direct connection ramp from US 90 westbound to McMullen Dr southbound. Photo taken 08/31/08.
US 90 eastbound at General McMullen Drive. The road was named for General Clements McMullen of the US Army. The general worked with the city to build a "super arterial" to connect Kelly AFB with the north side of the city. Work started on the road in 1954, and at the time San Antonio did not have any major routes connecting the south and north sides of town. The route was originally called Stephenson Road, but was renamed for the general in honor of his efforts at getting the road constructed. Photo taken 08/31/08.

Zarzamora Street is a north/south arterial route along the west side of downtown. It has an interchange with IH 35 on the south side, as well. The exit ramp crosses over the ramp to Spur 371, which runs southeast to the old air force bases. That exit can only be reached by heading west along US 90. Photo taken 08/31/08.
The upcoming interchange with the interstates is signed here, again. US 87 is coupled with IH 35 here but the US highway never reaches Austin, instead it heads west out of town with IH 10. On the north side of town, US 87's control point is shown as San Angelo. For motorists headed south, Laredo is the last control point on IH 35 before one reaches Mexico. Photo taken 08/31/08.
The freeway achieves 12 lanes east of Zarzamora and keeps 10 of them east of the Loop 353 exit. Nogalitos Street runs primarily along the south side of San Antonio, the area with the highest concentration of Mexican Americans. Loop 353 was signed as US 81 until the 1960s, when the US highway was merged with the new interstate, and later removed from San Antonio altogether. Photo taken 08/31/08.
East of Loop 353, the next interchange is the last along eastbound Cielo Rodriguez Freeway. The Alamo and downtown San Antonio are shown here as being accessed from IH 35 northbound. The distinctive Alamo signs are on every downtown freeway and point to one of the city's most popular tourist attractions. Photo taken 08/31/08.
The US 90 freeway ends here on the southwest side of downtown. US 90 continues eastbound but loses its distinctiveness as it is cosigned with IH 10. The US route follows IH 10 for the rest of its life before ending at the Atlantic Ocean near Jacksonville, Florida. Photo taken 08/31/08.
