Construction underway from September 2022 to June 2026 reconstructs Exit 5 for Madison Avenue into a tight urban diamond interchange meeting current design standards and capacity needs.1

Southwest from Madison Avenue, I-80/U.S. 6 converge with Interstate 29 at a systems interchange where a dual freeway configuration commences. The Local roadway provides access to Council Bluffs exits and nearby motorist services.

Exit 4 A departs next for Interstate 29 south to St. Joseph and Kansas City, Missouri. Exit 4 B follows onto the I-29/80 Local roadway to Council Bluffs streets.

The Local lanes utilize the Interstate 29 exit numbering system. Exit 49 departs in one mile for S Expressway (old Iowa 192). Exit 50 joins the Local lanes with S 24th Street in 2.25 miles. Exit 52 to Nebraska Avenue is beyond the separation with I-80 west along I-29/U.S. 6 north.

Exit 4 to I-29 south formerly departed from the left side of Interstate 80 west. A new flyover was constructed from the outside lanes as part of the Council Bluffs Interstate System Improvement Program completed in August 2021.
