Interstate 880 was established in Fall 2019 along what was the northern leg of I-680 between I-29 at Loveland and I-80 near Minden in Pottawattamie County. Approved by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) on October 5, 2019, the designation was created in place of I-680 to reduce motorist confusion that resulted from multiple closures of both I-29 and I-680 west from Crescent due to Missouri River flood events in 2018 and 2019. The rural freeway provides part of a regional connection between Sioux City via I-29 and Des Moines via I-80.
